Why Shedeur Sanders told Deion to stay away from Browns camp
Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders does not want any distractions.
That is why he did not want anyone visiting him during training camp this preseason, not even family.
His father, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, was told not to show up at training camp because the rookie was not where he wanted to be yet in his development.
“Shedeur told me not to come,” Deion Sanders, who revealed Monday he had his bladder removed after a cancerous tumor was found, told former Cowboys great Michael Irvin in an interview Monday. “Let’s get that out. He didn’t want me to come. He [was] like, ‘Dad, I’m getting three, four reps at practice. I don’t want you seeing that. I’m not where I need to be. Let me get where I need to be.’”
Shedeur has not received any first-team reps yet, according to ESPN, sitting behind veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, whom Cleveland selected in the third round.
Potentially sitting fourth on the depth chart is a situation Shedeur probably did not envision leading into the NFL draft.
He was once touted as being a top-five pick, but the first two days of the draft came and went and he did not hear his name called.
The Browns finally ended the slide when they picked him in the fifth round with the No. 144 selection.
While it would have been easy to complain and say he now had a chip on their shoulder, Shedeur kept quiet and focused on football.
“He’s dealing with it like a pro. Like, he ain’t mad,” Deion said. “He’s like, ‘I got work to do and I’m gonna put in this work. One thing [is], they’re going to have to let me play. Preseason is gonna come. And when preseason comes, watch me work.’”
Shedeur’s attitude was rumored to be a major reason why he fell so far. If what his father is saying is true, it seems like Shedeur could be learning from his past mistakes before the draft.
If Shedeur can hold onto the third spot by the end of training camp, he will most likely have his chance to show out during the preseason games.
Maybe then, Deion can attend one of those games.
