Brad Pitt was ‘threatened’ by then-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow’s success
Brad Pitt wasn’t too happy about his then-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow’s rising success, according to a new biography.
Author Amy Odell claims in “Gwyneth: The Biography” that, 18 months into their relationship, the actress would go over to makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin’s apartment to unload.
She “cried about Pitt multiple times,” noting that an unnamed source alleges that Pitt “seemed to feel threatened by her success and all the attention she received.”
“[Aucoin’s] advice to Paltrow was frank, ‘You really need to end this.’”
The couple first began dating in 1994 after meeting on the set of “Se7en,” where Pitt was immediately captivated by Paltrow. By that time, Pitt was already a huge star.
“I knew immediately, I’ll tell you that much. I got within 10 feet of her, and I got goofy. I couldn’t talk,” the “Fight Club” star revealed in a 1997 interview with Rolling Stone.
During his 1996 Golden Globes acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actor, he thanked Paltrow, calling her “my angel” and “the love of my life.”
Pitt, now 61, also stood up to Harvey Weinstein after Paltrow told him that the movie producer had sexually harassed her in a hotel room during the early days of her career.
“He said, ‘If you ever make her feel uncomfortable again, I’ll kill you,’” she recalled Pitt told Weinstein during a 2018 interview with Howard Sten. “Or something like that.”
“It was so fantastic,” she added. “He leveraged his fame and power to protect me at a time when I didn’t have fame or power yet.”
Paltrow and Pitt went on to date for two years before he proposed in December 1996. However, there were cracks in their relationship and they called it off six months later.
The “Shakespeare In Love” star, now 52, reportedly nursed a crush on Hugh Grant while dating Pitt and looked down on his humble background.
“‘Brad and I had very different upbringings,” she told an interviewer, per her memoir. “So when we go to restaurants and order caviar, I have to say to Brad, ‘This is beluga and this is osetra.’”
Paltrow later married musician Chris Martin, with whom she shares two children: daughter Apple and son Moses. They divorced in 2014 after more than 10 years of marriage.
The Goop founder is currently married to producer Brad Falchuk, whom she wed in 2018.
Pitt went on to marry Jennifer Aniston in 2000 but split five years later. He then struck up a romance with Angelina Jolie, with whom he shares six children. They married in 2014 but abruptly split two years later amid accusations of abuse.
“Gwyneth: The Biography” is out now.
