All of WWE’s cards on the table for Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena
It’s all there for WWE at SummerSlam when it comes to John Cena and Cody Rhodes, as it feels like they have left them the ability to pivot in whatever direction needed seamlessly.
For a while, I’ve earmarked Sunday night at MetLife Stadium (7 p.m., Peacock) as the perfect time to pull off one of the best double-turns in wrestling history. Have Rhodes want to regain the Undisputed WWE championship so badly that he is willing to make that deal with The Rock and beat the babyface out of Cena, so the 17-time champion can end his retirement tour the right way.
The Rock said in his interview on “The Pat McAfee Show” after not appearing at WrestleMania 41 that they could always go back to him coming for Rhodes’ “soul.” It would add a meaningful byproduct to Cena’s heel turn in using it to turn its biggest babyface in Rhodes to the dark side. WWE has left itself the ability to do just that.
Fans noticed Rhodes wearing glasses similar to The Rock and the watch that The Final Boss once posted to social media when he returned on the July 18 episode of SmackDown. We saw Rhodes seething at the table during his contract signing with Cena two weeks ago. Last week on SmackDown, Rhodes, who said he would not flinch to beat his mentor this time, spoke of wanting to wrestle the true Cena and is hellbent on trying to bring the babyface back to us.
