Hordes of rats have shown up in Long Island town amid recent wealth boom
Residents of this Long Island town aren’t the only ones striking gold.
Locals in Huntington, where residents have been experiencing a sudden wealth boom, are facing another kind of influx — rats.
Town officials are investigating a mysterious rodent infestation in downtown Huntington, where recent videos have captured hordes of large rats scurrying across idyllic suburban streets of restaurants and shops, News 12 Long Island reported.
Residents of the affluent enclave — where median household incomes have surged by a whopping 22.8% — are growing increasingly concerned about the sightings as officials try to identify the reason for the rats’ unwelcomed arrival, according to Suffolk County officials.
Footage obtained by the outlet showed about a dozen rats scurrying around on a grassy plot in town. On the News12 social media post, a commenter claimed to have also seen “50 rats running” in the area recently.
The rodents have interrupted the regularly scheduled programming of the otherwise quaint, picturesque Suffolk community.
“The guests come out, they dine on our patio, and for you to see little critters running around the street, it’s not exactly appealing, so it would be nice if they were gone,” Kelly Romandi, manager of The Shed restaurant, told the outlet.
“To see them across the street the first time was definitely very startling,” she said.
Edmund J. Smyth, the town supervisor, is currently working with local restaurants and building owners to mitigate the problem, according to the outlet.
The stomach-turning sightings come just as Huntington placed 16th on a list of the top 50 US towns where residents are building wealth the fastest, according to a study conducted by GOBankingRates.
The median household income in Huntington was $131,989 in 2020. That figure, by 2023, had risen to $162,066.
Meanwhile, the number of Huntington households making over $200,000 rose by a staggering 22.6% during the same four-year period — one of the highest percentages in the US.
The Suffolk Department of Health did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
