Browns GM calls out Shedeur Sanders for ‘not smart’ offseason

Shedeur Sanders’ slide to the fifth round of the draft was based in no small part on questions about his maturity, which led to the perception he would become a distraction.

That already appears to be playing out in the public eye.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry was forced to address the two speeding tickets for which Sanders was cited this offseason, and said the team has discussed it with Sanders.

“Not smart. Just not smart,” Berry told reporters. “It’s something that we’ve addressed with him. Look, he understands the implications, he understands the consequences. It’s not just about yourself. It’s not just about having a joyride, but that you could injure other people. … A deer or something cuts in front of you, your reaction time, it’s just dangerous.”

Both of Sanders’ tickets came in June. He was first pulled over for driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone, then for going 101 mph in a 60 mph zone.

The former Colorado quarterback was a lightning rod throughout the draft process before dramatically sliding not only out of the first round, but all the way to day three.

He’ll have a chance to win reps during training camp, but so far, it appears that he’s behind third-round pick Dillon Gabriel, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett on the depth chart.

Sanders and Gabriel are likely competing for the QB3 spot on the roster, and the loser will be relegated to the practice squad.

If Sanders is put on the practice squad, other teams will have the chance to sign him, but it’s not clear how likely that would be.

Regardless, it seems his training camp is not off to an ideal start.
