Woman’s Husband Wants to Hire Private Investigator to Look into Teen Son’s Girlfriend

A woman said her husband is going to extreme lengths when it comes to accepting their teenage son’s new girlfriend.

In a post on the U.K.-based forum Mumsnet, the mother wrote that her 17-year-old has a girlfriend he’s been seeing for “a few weeks.”

Detailing that her son’s partner “comes from the next town over” and “seems nice enough,” the woman said her son recently asked her and her husband if his girlfriend could stay over one weekend.

Despite her child and his girlfriend already “spending a lot of time here anyway, mostly watching films in his room, door open etc.,” the mom said her husband “suddenly” changed his tune when the sleepover request was made, and he now has an issue with the young woman.

According to the woman, her husband said he’s “getting bad vibes” from his son’s girlfriend. The Mumsnet user wrote that her husband also “couldn’t really explain what he meant, just that ‘something’s off’ and ‘you never know these days.’ ”

Now, the woman said her husband “wants to hire a private investigator to do a background check” before the couple allows their son’s girlfriend to stay with them. “He’s already been Googling local firms and tried to act like this is totally normal and responsible parenting,” she wrote.

The woman is in disagreement with her husband and “told him he was being ridiculous and over the top.” Still, she said, “He’s digging his heels in and going on about ‘protecting’ [our son] and how ‘she could be hiding something’ and we need to be ‘vigilant.’ ”

Reiterating that their son’s girlfriend has “been nothing but respectful,” and that the teenager “is completely smitten” with her, the woman added, “I think if he finds out we’re even considering this, he’ll go nuclear.”

In the comments section of the post, many sided with the woman, explaining that they too thought her husband was being dramatic.

“This is crazy. Tell him to get a grip,” one Mumsnet user wrote, as another said, “This is completely mad.” Added one more: “A private investigator? For a 17-year-old? That’s insane.”

Others, meanwhile, couldn’t help but feel there was more to the story — specifically surrounding why the woman’s husband had such a strong reaction to their son’s love interest.

“Is there anything in the girl’s background that might trigger him?” asked one commentator, while another questioned, “What does he think she is going to do? Is your son heir to a massive fortune or something?”
