Brandon Graham could make Eagles comeback after Za’Darius Smith retirement

No Eagle has played more regular-season games with the franchise than Brandon Graham’s 206.

He might extend that record.

The 37-year-old is pondering unretiring and joining Philadelphia for what would be his 16th season with the team, according to multiple reports this weekend that followed the retirement of fellow defensive end Za’Darius Smith.

Graham, who is third in Eagles history with 76.5 sacks and who returned from a torn triceps last season to play in the Super Bowl, was a valuable part of the organization’s defensive line for a decade and a half.

The 2010 first-round pick and longtime locker-room leader contributed against the Chiefs, celebrated the victory then announced that he was hanging up his cleats at an emotional news conference.

Ever since, Graham has not strayed far from the game and has been involved in media, including a weekly “Brandon Graham Unblocked” podcast.

He watched Smith, a 33-year-old edge rusher playing in his 11th NFL season, announce his sudden, midseason retirement Monday that only worsened a problem on the Eagles’ defensive line.

Graham acknowledged that fans, at least, had been lobbying for him to return.

“I’m flattered, actually, that everybody [says], ‘Come on back, come on back,’” Graham said on the podcast, according to NFL.com. “It’s pretty cool.”

That “pretty cool” has graduated to reported discussions with the Eagles concerning a comeback. The Eagles, who enter Sunday’s game in Minnesota with a 4-2 record, have recorded just nine sacks this season, tied for the seventh-least in the NFL.
