Angel Reese doesn’t hold back on ‘really scary’ relationship with media
Angel Reese opened up about her contentious relationship with the media during an episode of her “Unapologetically Angel” podcast, saying she’d rather get fined than talk with reporters because her answers end up getting twisted.
“Seriously, I’d rather take the fine sometimes rather than talking to the media because it always gets flipped,” Reese said during the episode released Thursday.
“For me, the media is really scary. That’s why I have never been on anybody else’s podcast. I’m scared to do stuff like that because I know how things could get flipped.”
Reese, who just finished her second season with the Sky, has been the center of headlines dating back to her collegiate career at LSU and continuing once she was drafted by Chicago — for what was labeled a rivalry with Caitlin Clark, for comments about the growth of the WNBA and more.
Near the end of the disastrous campaign, Reese called out her teammates and not-so-subtly hinted at potentially needing to go in a “different direction.”
Her exit interview following the Sky’s season was later canceled
“I am very vocal about what we need and what I want,” Reese told the Chicago Tribune last month, while also saying she didn’t want to “settle for the same s–t we did this year” with the Sky en route to a 10-34 record.
“I’d like to be here for my career, but if things don’t pan out, obviously I might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me. But while I am here, I’m going to try to stay open-minded about what I have here and maximize that as much as I can.”
Reese said her comments were taken out of context, but she was suspended for the first half of a game as a result and ended up missing the rest of the season due to a lingering back injury, too.
“Even before the game, I’m terrified of what the media is about to ask,” Reese said on her podcast with guest Taylor Rooks. “It could be the nicest question, but it’s going to get flipped or put into a different light or a different perspective. It’s like, are you here intentionally to start mess or are you intentionally here to ask a question?
“It’s really tough for me, especially in the media. It’s like, I don’t want to do an interview with anybody. I get excited for certain people, like a Taylor [Rooks]. Certain people I know I can talk to, but I’ll take the fine.”
Reese averaged 14.6 points and 12.7 rebounds per game during her second campaign and made a second consecutive WNBA All-Star Game.
She appeared in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show earlier this week.
