Starz‘s Outlander prequel shows us exactly how far back Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) intertwined destinies go. According to the show — created by Outlander EP Matthew B. Roberts — Claire’s parents didn’t die in a car crash when she was girl. Instead, they traveled back in time to 1714 Scotland where they were instrumental in the story of how Jamie’s parents met and fell in love. (Diana Gabaldon may politely disagree with this version of events within her own Outlander canon.)

Over the course of Outlander: Blood of My Blood‘s first season, we got to meet Jamie’s fiery mother Ellen (Harriet Slater) and kind-hearted father Brian (Jamie Roy) as well as Claire’s brilliant mom Julia (Hermione Corfield) and courageous father Henry (Jeremy Irvine). We’ve gotten to see younger versions of Outlander faves like Murtagh (Rory Alexander), Dougal (Sam Retford), and Ned Gowan (Conor MacNeill). We’ve attended an enchanting Beltane festival and borne witness to the worst baby shower ever.

That said, Blood of My Blood creator Matthew B. Roberts told DECIDER that while he would love “the audience to to see it as soon as I’m done making it,” it’s not in his “purview” to promise that the next season will come out next year.

“I just make the show and when they air it, they air it. That’s the same with Outlander,” Roberts said. “I think what people forget is that networks have other shows and they plan those out and those time slots are taken.”
