Rival coach says the Titans are historically awful as dysfunction engulfs floundering team

Cam Ward said a few weeks ago that the Titans are “ass.”

Well, a Raiders coach took it to another level after watching Tennessee play football for 60 minutes this past Sunday.

“That might be the worst team I’ve seen in the last 25 years,” one Raiders coach told The Athletic.

“They don’t have any difference-makers other than (defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons), and the whole thing was a total mess.”

Whether they’re ass or the worst team of the last 25 years (Editor’s note: The 2025 Jets, 2017 Browns and 2008 Lions certainly are making cases for that dubious distinction), the overarching theme is that the Titans are a certified disaster.

The team has been uncompetitive in its 1-5 start, resulting in Brian Callahan becoming the first coach to be fired this season on Monday.

No. 1 pick Ward — perhaps due to Callahan’s coaching — has not looked the part of a franchise-changing quarterback, throwing just three touchdown passes while tossing four interceptions.

He gave himself an “F” grade in his talk with The Athletic before the awful 20-10 road loss to a reeling Raiders team this past Sunday.

The Titans rank last in yards per game (232.3) and 31st in points per game (13.8), while the defense is yielding the seventh-most points per game (26.8) and the eighth-most rushing yards per contest (133.7).

Things are so bad that Simmons, the defensive standout, noted how awful the team practice the Thursday before the Raiders loss was in a stunning contrast to the usual post-loss cliches about how great a week of practice the losing squad had before a disheartening defeat.

“In this league, you have to learn how to be able to stack wins and carry that momentum over,” Simmons said, according to The Athletic. “It started at practice. Just being honest, this was probably one of our worst weeks of practice. We came out flat Thursday. Sometimes things carry over.”

The Titans now turn to interim coach Mike McCoy to try to salvage a ship that is already 99 percent under water, and the front office can then hire a new coach in the offseason.

President of football operations Chad Brinker kept harping on a lack of growth when discussing why the team moved on from Callahan, noting that Ward’s development plays a role in that.

If the Titans can show any growth, it will be a huge step forward from the unwatchable product currently being put on the field.

“I think there’s growth opportunities throughout the roster, whether that’s offense, defense, special teams. We need to see more from our players, from our coaches and we got to get better,” Brinker said. “There’s a standard we’re trying to uphold here moving forward and we’re just not meeting that standard.”
