Neil Young slammed on social media for taking music off Amazon over Trump: ‘A has been’

Neil Young plans to scrap his entire music catalogue from Amazon, because he believes founder Jeff Bezos backs President Trump.

“Forget Amazon and Whole Foods. Forget Facebook,” Young, 79, wrote in an Oct. 8 post on his Neil Young Archives website.

“Buy local. Buy direct. Bezos supports this government. It does not support you or me.”

The “Heart of Gold” singer added: “[Amazon] needs you to buy from them. Don’t. They shut down our government your income your safety your family’s health security. Take America Back together, stop buying from the big corporations support local business. Do the right thing. Show who you are.”

Social media backlash to the politically driven Amazon exit was swift. X users were slamming the announcement on Monday, calling the move Young’s latest grab at relevance.

“Dude is a kook. It’s sad what’s happened to him. He used to be amazing,” wrote @DenifLewesa.

“Who is buying his music anyway?,” said @leslieedwardsre. “He’s a has been who only gets attention when he pulls his music from Spotify and now Amazon. Nobody cares if Neil Young removes his music.”

And dredging up Young’s old feud with Leonard Skynyrd over Young’s 1970 song “Southern Man,” many users adjusted a line from Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama”: “I hope Neil Young will remember a Southern man don’t need him around, anyhow.”

Young threw a similar fit back in 2022 when he yanked his music from Spotify in protest of Joe Rogan’s podcast being on the platform. The folk-rock legend returned in 2024.

During the Spotify boycott, Young actually offered fans free subscriptions to Amazon Music — the same streaming service he’s now abandoning.

This August, he pulled down his official Neil Young Facebook page because of the company’s use of AI.

“At Neil Young’s request, we are no longer using Facebook for any Neil Young related activities,” a post on the platform read. “Meta‘s use of chatbots with children is unconscionable. Mr. Young does not want a further connection with FACEBOOK.”
