Trump and Zelensky phone call comes as transfer of US Tomahawk missiles to Kyiv is seen as progressing: ‘positive signals’

President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed bringing an end to Russia’s invasion during a phone call Saturday — with the US arming Kyiv with Tomahawk missiles seeming increasingly likely.

The two leaders discussed Tomahawks and air defense systems during the phone call, Axios reported.

“I had a call with US President Donald Trump — a very positive and productive one,” Zelensky wrote on X Saturday.

“We discussed opportunities to bolster our air defense, as well as concrete agreements that we are working on to ensure this. There are good options and solid ideas on how to truly strengthen us.”

“I received the necessary signals that the US is considering ways to strengthen our cooperation. We are grateful for this,” he added in another post.

Discussions between the US and Ukraine about the high-powered missiles are showing “positive signals,” with technical coordination between the two countries already underway, according to Ukraine Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi.

“Right now, there is no ‘no’ response,”Tykhyi said during a Friday briefing, adding the talks were “very detailed and active.”

Tomahawks are seen as a gamechanger in the war on Ukraine because they can reach targets as far as 1,500 miles away with precision, putting even Moscow easily within reach — and would “scare the s–t out of the Russians more than almost anything else we could do,” according to a senior congressional aide.

Kyiv has long sought to get its hands on the highly-coveted munitions, but its requests were repeatedly rebuffed during the Biden administration.

Tykhyi said the two countries were now working out the specifics of the request.

“Currently, the Ukrainian and American teams are working to coordinate all these details, discussing all the nuances regarding in what forms and configurations the missiles can be provided to Ukraine,” the spokesperson said, according to Ukrainian news agency RBC

It comes after Zelensky asked Trump in a secret meeting last month at the UN to sell Kyiv the long-range missiles to heighten the pressure on Russia to end its bloody war.

Trump said earlier this week that he has “sort of made a decision” on whether to supply Ukraine with Tomahawks but wanted “to find out what they’re doing with them” — to make sure it doesn’t escalate the war.

The missiles are considered capable of obliterating Russian oil refineries and military bases. Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv Wednesday the move could force Vladimir Putin to “sober up a bit – sit down at the negotiating table.”

Moscow then made a desperate threat to shoot down all Tomahawk cruise missiles and destroy their launch sites if the deal with the US goes through.
