11-year-old boy fatally shot in head while playing with handgun in Hudson Valley, prompting school lockdowns
An 11-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head while playing with a handgun in New York’s Hudson Valley early Thursday, putting all of the city of Newburgh’s schools on lockout as cops swarmed the neighborhood.
Newburgh police said in a news release that cops responded to a home on North Miller Street at 8:17 a.m. on reports of a shooting incident and found the young boy dead inside the home.
The scene is a block away from the Bishop Dunn Memorial School, prompting district officials to order the safety measure as a precaution.
Sources told News12 that the youngster and several friends were playing with a handgun when the weapon went off and struck him in the head.
School district officials assured panicked parents that no students in the school were hurt, and the lockout was lifted shortly after noon, according to the outlet.
The Newburgh Police Department did not identify the boy and has not officially released details of the incident.
