Woman Refuses to Dog-Sit After Learning Pup Has Raw Diet
NEED TO KNOW
- A Mumsnet user wondered if she was unreasonable for backing out of a dog-sitting agreement
- The vegetarian woman was uncomfortable feeding the canine a raw diet
- The woman had previously dog-sat for this canine without issues
A woman has walked back on an offer to dog-sit for a friend after learning of new job responsibilities.
The woman asked via internet forum Mumsnet if her discomfort around caretaking expectations was unreasonable, as well as her decision to pull out of a months-long arrangement.
A week before she was set to dog-sit, the woman received a message detailing the canine’s raw diet, which differed from the dry food she’d fed him during previous sits.
“I can’t cope with that as I’m vegetarian and autistic and have issues around food smells!” the woman wrote in the Mumsnet post.
Raw dog food typically contains human-grade meat and vegetables, and it has been linked to improved digestion for canines.
In addition to involved meal-time duties, the woman was asked to take the dog to a grooming appointment.
“I’ve said it’s not going to be possible for me to facilitate the raw feeding or the appointment,” she wrote. “This has caused a massive issue as friend wasn’t prepared to back down, so I’ve said ‘sorry you’ll have to make alternative arrangements.'”

“I wasn’t expected to do anything more than feed, walk, look after him,” she wrote.
She also noted that while she had seen the friends recently, nothing was mentioned about the raw diet.
Most Mumsnet users in the comments agreed that the woman’s decision to step back was reasonable. Many also wrote it was not worth a friendship falling out entirely.
“It is a very different ball game to tipping some kibble into a bowl twice a day,” one user wrote.

Others sympathized with the friend and the tight time frame.
“She has moved the goalposts, but she probably hadn’t realized that any of this would be an issue,” another user wrote. “She clearly loves her dog and would not want to stick him/her in some kennels — even if she could get a place — so you are forcing her to cancel her trip over trivial matters.”
The forum did, however, agree that the dog grooming appointment could be rescheduled to a later date.
