- The tension between the two actresses shows off some top-tier soap opera magic, 31 years after the scene first aired
Fans are still admiring the energy Sarah Michelle Gellar and Susan Lucci shared in Pine Valley.
All My Children watchers will remember that Gellar, 48, played Kendall Hart from Feb. 1993 to July 1995. Recently, the anniversary of an intense scene that saw Kendall feuding with her biological mom, Erica Kane (Lucci, 78), got fans talking about the duo.
In the scene, highlighted on Reddit on Sept. 27, 31 years to the day that it aired, the two women begin to argue amid a shopping outing. Erica has sniping words to deliver to her daughter, born to her as the result of a rape during her own teen years.
“You can’t love anyone, Kendall, and you can’t be loved. There’s a word for that. Do you know that? You’re a sociopath,” Erica said.
“That’s a lie. That’s a lie!” screams Kendall. “People love me. Lots of people love me.”

Erica then challenges her to “name one,” saying that Kendall’s on-and-off beau Anton didn’t count. “You can’t use that boy anymore to fall back on. He gave you a lot of chances, but that’s it.”
Kendall accused Erica of “lying” and “turning them all against me,” shouting, “You’re the one who’s cold and unfeeling.”
“No, you turned them all against you,” Erica leveled. “You only have feelings for yourself. You’re going to end up a very lonely old woman someday. And if you keep it up, you will die in that seedy motel room, just like your father did — all alone and hated, with no one to mourn you. No one will even notice you’re gone.”

In a rage, Kendall pulls Erica as she walks away and the women begin to tussle. As people, including Kendall’s Anton, step in to intervene, Erica says, “You stay away from me. Do you understand me? I never want to see your face again, and if I see you on the same street, I will slap a restraining order on you. Do you understand me? You’ll be back in jail so fast, it’ll make your head spin.”
“How can you say that? You gave birth to me. You brought me into this world,” Kendall says, dejected and angry.
“Yes, I did bring you into this world, and I can take you out.” Erica says.
Fans commended both actresses on how they maneuvered the intense scene.
“Oh, that was the good old days of soaps. They just don’t make them like this anymore. Brilliant acting from a great soap.” one commenter wrote.
“Sarah’s portrayal as Kendall was just immaculate! The story was so layered, and there was so much emotional nuance that even though she was completely nuts most of the time, the way that Sarah played her had me sympathizing with the character’s internal struggle,” another shared.
It would be six years after Gellar’s departure before the role was recast, with Alicia Minshew as Kendall. Lucci continued to play Erica over 1700 episodes, through the series’ completion in 2011.
