Nicole Kidman is looking to the future after filing for divorce from Keith Urban.
“She’s been stressed because she knew the separation would eventually become public and she was dreading it,” a source close to the family tells PEOPLE.
“But,” adds the source, “she’s surprisingly level-headed and calm. Now that it’s out she’s just focused on what’s ahead and her girls.”
Reps for Kidman and Urban have not responded to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
News broke Monday, Sept. 29, that the Oscar winner, 58, and the country musician, 57, had separated early in the summer after 19 years of marriage. A day later, on Tuesday, Sept. 30, Kidman formally filed for divorce in Nashville, citing irreconcilable difference and listing the date of separation as the time of filing.

After marrying in 2006, the couple welcomed two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, who are now 17 and 14. Kidman asked to be primary residential parent in the custody agreement as part of the divorce filing.
PEOPLE heard from an insider on Monday who said Kidman “has been fighting to save the marriage.”
“She didn’t want this,” added that insider, who said “the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another,” particularly Kidman’s sister Antonia. The siblings were spotted on a walk together on Wednesday, Oct. 1, marking Kidman’s first sighting since the divorce news.
In the ’90s, Kidman was married to Tom Cruise, with whom she shares two kids, Bella and Connor, who are now 32 and 30.
She told Harper’s Bazaar in 2021 that her divorce with Cruise, now 63, and the public attention that came in the aftermath made her “a bit more trepidatious, but I’m always trying to be as open as possible.”
“I’m wary at times, and I’ve been hurt, but at the same time I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shutdown approach,” Kidman said at the time. “My husband Keith says that when he met me he said, ‘How’s your heart?’ And I apparently responded, ‘Open.’ “
