A Scottish woman who moved to Los Angeles to become an attorney was found dead in her apartment — and her husband is now charged with murder.

The BBC, KTLA and CBS News reported that Jonathan Renteria, 25, has been charged with the murder of June Bunyan, 37. According to Los Angeles County jail records, Renteria is being held on $4 million bail.

KTLA and CBS News reported that authorities first responded to an incident in Ventura County, where Renteria reportedly attempted suicide at a hotel.

Ventura County authorities alleged that they found a note left behind, in which Renteria wrote that he had killed his wife, according to the outlets. The Los Angeles Police Department was subsequently notified.

On Sept. 11, the LAPD conducted a welfare check at Renteria’s home and found Bunyan’s body dismembered and decomposed, CBS reported.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Bunyan’s cause of death was traumatic neck injuries.

Online court records reviewed by PEOPLE show that Renteria has also been charged with mutilation and sexual contact with remains. He has pleaded not guilty.

KTLA, CBS and ABC 7 reported that Bunyan had recently given birth to a baby girl.

According to a GoFundMe started by the victim’s family, Bunyan had moved to the United States from Scotland to “pursue her dream of becoming a defence attorney.”

“June’s life was cut short so far from home, and we are now faced with the heartbreaking task of bringing her back to the UK,” her parents wrote in the GoFundMe. “She can then be laid to rest with the dignity and love she deserves, surrounded by family and friends.”

Prior to her death, Bunyan had started a paralegal service business specializing in immigration law called Renteria Paralegal Services.
