Josh Hartnett was hospitalized following an alleged collision between an SUV in which he was riding and a Canadian police vehicle last week.

Hartnett, 47, was riding in the SUV when it was reportedly struck by a Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) patrol vehicle in St. John’s, the capital of the province of Newfoundland, Canada, on Thursday, Sept. 25, according to CBC News. A 59-year-old man was driving the SUV at the time of the collision, RNC said in a statement.

A representative for Hartnett confirmed to PEOPLE that the actor was checked out at a nearby hospital before being released and cleared to return to work.

The two-vehicle collision at the intersection of New Cove Road and Elizabeth Avenue happened shortly before 1 a.m. local time on Sept. 25.

The male police officer in the other vehicle was taken to a hospital as a precaution, police said.

“RNC collision analysts are seeking any witnesses or video footage (CCTV, dash-camera, cell phone) from the area in the lead up to, or immediately following the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000,” the RNC said.

The Bear star is currently in Canada filming an untitled series for Netflix that also stars Charlie Heaton and Mackenzie Davis.

The series centers on a “hard-bitten fisherman” who learns his hometown is “being terrorized by a mysterious creature,” Netflix said in an Aug. 1 Instagram post announcing the start of production.

Hartnett most recently starred in Fight Or Flight, which premiered in May. For the action-packed film, the actor performed many of his own stunts.

“I was bruised from head to toe. Yeah, head to toe,” Hartnett told PEOPLE. “I mean, it feels good to be able to really throw yourself into something physically and have it turn out the way that this has turned out. It makes it all worth it.”

In February, Hartnett was seen filming Verity with Anne Hathaway in New York City, when they were photographed running through the streets as they held hands while dressed in semi-formal attire. Verity is slated for release on May 15.

The RNC’s investigation into the collision remains ongoing. PEOPLE reached out to the RNC for further information on Monday, Sept. 29.
