Where Was ‘House of Guinness’ Filmed? All About the Real-Life Locations

House of Guinness shows 19th-century Dublin through the eyes of one of Ireland’s most prominent brewing dynasties. However, no scenes from Netflix’s historical drama were actually filmed in Ireland.

“The fact is that Dublin now looks less like Dublin in 1868 than other areas do,” showrunner and writer Steven Knight told Condé Nast Traveler in September 2025. “[Peaky Blinders] wasn’t filmed in Birmingham, because Birmingham didn’t look like Birmingham in the 20s anymore.” 

Starring Anthony Boyle and Louis Partridge, the series follows the real-life Guinness family after the death of their patriarch, Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness. The grandson of Guinness Beer inventor Arthur Guinness left control of the brewery business to two of his four children, declaring in his will, in the trailer for the show, that he felt it wise not to “burden” his other two children with “the temptations that come with fortune.”

So, where was House of Guinness filmed? Here’s everything to know about the real-life shooting locations and how the production team recreated the family’s prominent estates.

North West, England 

Though House of Guinness is set in Dublin and New York, filming took place in areas of North West England like Liverpool, Manchester and Yorkshire. Director Tom Shankland told Condé Nast Traveler that it was easier to recreate the family’s historic sites — some of which are still standing — in Liverpool’s “Georgian-era streets and buildings.”

“You’re like, ‘That’s Iveagh House!’ in a way that we could never have achieved at [Dublin’s] St. Stephen’s Green,” he told the publication.

Specific shooting sites in Manchester include Dale Street, Paton Street, China Lane and Back Piccadilly in the city’s Northern Quarter, which were meant to represent New York’s Bowery neighborhood in episode 4.

Shots meant to look like Dublin took place in the underbanks of Stockport, St Mary’s Church and St George’s Church.

St George’s Hall

Another major Liverpool site that received some screen time in House of Guinness was St George’s Hall, a mid-19th-century neoclassical public building situated in the center of the city.

The hall is featured during the riot in episode 1 and the demonstration in episode 3. It was also used in The Batman, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Peaky Blinders.

Liverpool’s Sefton Park Palm House also served as a shooting location for episode 2 for the botanical gardens in which Arthur has a secret meeting.

Penrhyn Castle

The Guinness family sold their iconic Ashford Castle in 1939, according to Condé Nast Traveler. Therefore, the castle featured in episode 3 of House of Guinness, when Anne visits, is actually Penrhyn Castle, located in Bangor, North Wales.

One of the largest castles in Britain, the Norman-style property was built in the early 19th century on the site of a 15th-century manor house.

Stanley Dock

On Dec. 31, 1759, Arthur signed a 9,000-year lease on St. James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin. Though the site is still operational today, scenes inside the family’s brewhouse were shot in a former tobacco warehouse on Liverpool’s Stanley Dock.

Netflix’s production team recreated the factory floor, offices and outdoor areas of St. James’s Gate on the dock — an undertaking that production designer Richard Bullock described as “insanely complex” and “absolutely nuts to try to do.”

“Given how many different brewery locations we needed — the stables, the cooperage, the docks —it was invaluable to have all of that in one place, so the characters could move through it naturally,” executive producer Karen Wilson told Condé Nast Traveler.

Croxteth Hall

The series’ production team recreated the exterior of the family’s Dublin-based mansion, the Iveagh House, using Croxteth Hall in Liverpool, per Condé Nast Traveler. Scenes filmed inside the home, including those in the ballroom and the drawing room, were shot on sound stages in Manchester.

Though Iveagh House is still standing, it has been the home of the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade since 1939.

Broughton Hall

One of the family’s other extravagant estates, the St Anne’s house, was demolished after a fire in 1968. Condé Nast Traveler reported that the production team recreated the mansion at Broughton Hall in Skipton, Yorkshire.

House of Guinness is just one of the many TV and film projects that have been shot at the 14th-century home, including the 1992 adaptation of Wuthering Heights and Gentleman Jack.
