Nicole Kidman once said she was “wary” and “a little more trepidatious” following her split from Tom Cruise, though for Keith Urban, her heart was “open.”

In the wake of Kidman, 58, and the 57-year-old country music artist’s split, which PEOPLE confirmed on Monday, Sept. 29, one of the actress’ old interviews resurfaced, where she candidly shared how her divorce from Cruise affected her outlook.

Cruise and Kidman got married on Christmas Eve 1990. They welcomed their daughter, Bella, in December 1992 and their son, Connor, in January 1995, both via adoption. The couple then quietly separated in December 2000 and ultimately divorced.

When reflecting on her past relationship with Cruise, Kidman told Harper’s Bazaar in 2021 that the experience made her “a bit more trepidatious” in her romantic endeavors, but that she was always “trying to be as open as possible.”

“I just prefer to live in the world that way,” she said, before adding, “I’m wary at times, and I’ve been hurt, but at the same time I much prefer a warm approach rather than a prickly shutdown approach.”

Kidman said that when Urban first met her, he asked her, “How’s your heart?” to which she responded, “Open.”

The actress went on to say she and Urban are “always working through stuff, but it’s very much love-based, so there’s an enormous amount of give and take.”

“I want him to have the best life he can have, and he responds the same way. We really love parenting together,” she said.

Urban and Kidman, who tied the knot in June 2006, have two children together: daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14.

On the heels of the news, a source close to Kidman says that the actress is leaning on family amid the split.

Nicole’s sister [Antonia] has been a rock and the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another,” a source told PEOPLE exclusively, adding, “She didn’t want this. She has been fighting to save the marriage.”
