Glen Powell‘s phone stays buzzing — thanks to his Top Gun: Maverick castmates.
The actor, 36, tells PEOPLE in an exclusive interview that he still keeps in touch with his costars from the 2022 film, a sequel to 1986’s Top Gun, through a group text chat.
“Sometimes I’ll get a little information every once in a while from the gang,” Powell says, adding that “the Top Gun chain is alive with congratulations to each other, about sort of movie openings or nominations, or whatever it is.”
“Miles’ movie doing really well, Monica getting nominated for an Oscar,” he shares as examples, referring to costars Miles Teller and Monica Barbaro, respectively, then also giving shoutouts to Lewis Pullman and Danny Ramirez‘s latest projects.
“Everybody is getting to do all these really wonderful, cool things, so it’s a lot of congratulations,” Powell reiterates.

Top Gun: Maverick follows Tom Cruise‘s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, 30 years after his graduation from TOPGUN Naval aviation program, when he is called back as an instructor for the elite fliers. Among his young charges is Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Teller), the son of his late best friend Goose (Anthony Edwards in the first movie).
The critically-praised and box office smash, directed by Joseph Kosinski, won various awards and earned numerous nominations, including some at the Academy Awards, the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globe Awards. Top Gun: Maverick was also named one of the top films of 2022 by the American Film Institute.
Back in January 2024, Variety confirmed that a follow-up film was in the works. Earlier this year, while appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in May, Christopher McQuarrie, a writer-producer of Top Gun: Maverick, said a third Top Gun film is in the works.

Still, Powell admits to PEOPLE, his Top Gun group text doesn’t have any top-secret insight to share. “I wish. I wish I had something. I literally have nothing,” he says. “There’s been no new dialogue on that text chain.”
“There was a lot of speculation about a movie there for a while, but no new intel,” adds the star — who has partnered with Raising Cane’s to promote his new Hulu series, Chad Powers.
Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick are available to purchase and stream online. Chad Powers will begin streaming on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
