Several school kids in Florida are recovering in the hospital after eating a “food item” offered to them by a classmate.

On Friday, Sept. 26, a student at Pinecrest Glades Academy in Miami allegedly shared a “food item” with five others who then suffered “adverse reactions,” requiring emergency services to be called, the school said in a statement.

The hospitalized students were aged between 14 and 16 years old, according to CBS News. Their identities have not been revealed at this time.

“A student brought a food item to campus, which was shared with others,” the academy said in their statement, without revealing the type of food that was shared. “Some students who consumed it began experiencing adverse reactions, and emergency medical teams were immediately called to provide assistance.

“Those students are receiving the necessary medical care,” the statement added.

The Miami-Dade Police Department responded to a “medical call” at the school at around 10:00 a.m. local time, UK-based newspaper The Independent reported.

“Due to the number of patients, the call was upgraded to a Level One MCI, with a total of five pediatric patients transported to a local hospital,” a police spokesperson told the outlet.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said in a statement shared with NBC 6 South Florida that the students were “intoxicated and receiving medical attention.” Despite their investigation continuing, the students “will not be interviewed until a later time.”

Photos from the scene show multiple police cars and fire trucks outside the school on Friday.

In a video obtained by NBC 6 South Florida, one student appears to be “alert” as they are carried out of the school on a gurney.

Pinecrest Glades Academy stated, “Please rest assured that we are taking every necessary step to address this unfortunate situation and to ensure the continued safety of our students.

“We ask that you take a moment to remind your children of the seriousness of their actions. What may seem like a simple choice can carry very severe consequences, including potential criminal charges and school-related disciplinary measures,” they concluded.

PEOPLE has reached out to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, police and fire department for comment.
