Season 27 of Law & Order: SVU started with a memorial service for Captain Donald Cragen (Dann Florek), the longtime leader of the SVU squad and mentor to Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler.
The episode opens with Benson walking into a bar, which turns out to be a wake for Cragen. At the solemn gathering, Benson reunited with other SVU characters such as Dr. Huang (BD Wong) and Cassidy (Dean Winters).
While watching a video of Cragen’s retirement speech playing on a TV at the memorial, Benson told ADA Dominick “Sonny” Carisi (Peter Scanavino) that he “was the best boss I ever had.”
“Everything I know about being a captain, I learned from him,” she said.

In January 2024, when speaking about Hargitay leading Law & Order: SVU, Florek told PEOPLE that it was “a beautiful passing of the baton.”
“I got to do one little scene, I think I shot it on Zoom, and I was able to say to her — I’m gonna cry — ‘You have no idea how proud it makes me to say ‘Captain,’ ” Florek said, referring to when he returned for the series’ 500th episode.

Florek has also reprised his role several times on another Law & Order spinoff, Law & Order: Organized Crime, where he reunited with Stabler.

At the end of the episode, Tynan offered Benson a deputy chief position for an SVU unit that would span all five of New York City’s boroughs — which she declined.
