Renée Elise Goldsberry‘s new documentary gives fans a glimpse into the hardships she faced balancing her career and motherhood.
In an exclusive clip shared with PEOPLE ahead of the theatrical release of Goldsberry’s documentary Satisfied, the mom of two, 54, candidly shares a heartbreaking moment between her and her son Benjamin, now 16. The snippet begins with an adorable clip of the Hamilton star enjoying dinner with her then-younger son in New York. However, Goldsberry said that things quickly took a turn when her nanny got there and it was time for her son to go back home.
“And then our nanny got there and I said, ‘Ok, Benjamin, it’s time to go,’ and he started crying,” she begins. “And he said, ‘No, Mommy. No, Mommy. Don’t send me home. Please let me stay with you.’ And I said, ‘Benjamin, don’t do this. I would never have brought you here if it was gonna upset you.'”
“And he says, ‘I’m sorry, Mommy. Thank you for bringing me here. I’m sorry,’ ” she continues. “You don’t have to thank your mommy for having dinner together. You should take for granted every minute, everything that you do with your mommy. That’s — oh, my God — you should take that for granted.”
Goldsberry, who starred as Angelica Schuyler in the Broadway hit musical Hamilton, shares her children with attorney husband Alexis Johnson. The Tony Award winner’s documentary, which is named after her show-stopping solo number in the hit Broadway play, premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Festival and is in theaters from Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.
According to a release for the film, the documentary “explores her life-changing experience originating the role of Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, while simultaneously navigating her path to motherhood and balancing the competing demands of career and family.”
In 2020, the proud mom spoke with PEOPLE about what being a parent means to her, as well as her greatest wish for her children.
“My greatest wish for my children is that they fulfill their purpose,” said Goldsberry, who was also among the group of people who won a Grammy for the Hamilton soundtrack. “I know that all children, and in particular mine, are here for a reason.”
“My path to motherhood was challenging, to say the least, and I always feel like I’m living a Sliding Doors version of my life,” she continued, saying she believed her children “getting here means they’re supposed to be here” before adding with a laugh, “I feel like my job is not to screw them up!”

The Waves actress’s children are certainly Hamilton fans.
While speaking with PEOPLE exclusively at Hamilton Night at the Yankees game on Monday, Aug. 25, the actress, shared that her two children — daughter Brielle, 11, and son Benjamin — are fans of the hit Broadway show. So much so that her kids used to listen to the soundtrack so much that she had to tell them to “turn it off.”
“They listen to it often,” Goldsberry told PEOPLE. “I think especially now, in this 10-year anniversary, there’s a lot of listening to Hamilton, and I let them listen to it in my house because when I was actually in the show and I would wake up in the morning and they’d be playing [it], I used to be like, ‘turn it off.'”
