Jimmy Kimmel is praising Julia Louis-Dreyfus‘ father for his position on President Richard Nixon‘s “enemies list.”

On the Thursday, Sept. 25, broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Louis-Dreyfus shared that her father, businessman Gérard “William” Louis-Dreyfus, was on the former president’s “enemies list” — a situation “interestingly similar” to Kimmel’s, the host suggested.

“He was a big civil rights activist and a big proponent of voter protection — and [the] First Amendment, of course,” Louis-Dreyfus, 64, said of her father, a French-American billionaire who died in 2016. “He made it onto Nixon’s enemies list.”

When Kimmel, 57, asked if that position was “terrifying” for her father, Louis-Dreyfus clarified: “It was a badge of honor to him.”

Nixon’s “enemies list” reportedly contained names of actors, journalists, other politicians and more, most of whom had ties to the Democratic Party, per a report from History.com. Nixon often used parts of the federal government to harass those on his list, which was believed to have nearly 500 names on it, per the printed copy that William kept.

Kimmel pulled a framed printout of the list from under his desk and showed it to the audience. “Now, I want to say, to Nixon’s credit — at least he released his list,” Kimmel added in an apparent dig at President Donald Trump.

“Richard Nixon seems quaint at the moment we’re living through,” Louis-Dreyfus agreed.

Louis-Dreyfus and Kimmel’s conversation about a past president’s retribution against his enemies comes after Trump’s long-running feud with Kimmel escalated in recent weeks.

Kimmel’s show was temporarily suspended on Sept. 17 over his comments about the investigation surrounding Charlie Kirk’s death. ABC opted to pause the program just after Trump’s Federal Communications Commission chair publicly threatened that “we can do this the easy way or the hard way.”

In the months prior to Kimmel’s suspension, Trump, 79, had been calling for his show to be canceled.

After six days of intense public backlash toward Disney and ABC — including discourse about whether the FCC was disregarding the First Amendment by seemingly targeting Trump’s critics — Kimmel’s show was reinstated on Sept. 23.

Hours ahead of his first show back, Kimmel shared a post on Instagram celebrating the late screenwriter Norman Lear, who was also on Nixon’s enemies list.

“Missing this guy today,” Kimmel wrote of Lear, who was notably and vocally against the FCC.
