Meet the Kids of the ‘Law & Order: SVU’ Cast

Since Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has been on the air for almost 30 years, fans have seemingly been brought up by Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and company — but in real life, members of the cast have been busy parents to their actual children off-screen.

The long-running Dick Wolf production is returning on Sept. 25 to kick off its historic 27th season, and Hargitay has been juggling leading the series and being a working mom since she welcomed her first child nearly two decades ago. In 2024, she spoke about finding that balance during a conversation with Selena Gomez for Interview magazine.

“Are there things I miss? Yeah. The flip side is that my kids are really proud of me,” Hargitay told the Only Murders In the Building star. “I am happier and living a fuller life, and they feel that and see that.”

In addition to Hargitay, multiple actors on Law & Order: SVU are also working parents. Ice-T and Kelli Giddish each have three kids, while Christopher Meloni shares two children with his wife, Sherman Williams.

Here’s everything to know about the kids of the Law & Order: SVU cast.

Mariska Hargitay has been playing Olivia Benson since the first episode of Law & Order: SVU premiered in 1999.

In the series, her character has a son, Noah, but in real life, Hargitay is a mom to three kids: August, Amaya and Andrew, whom she shares with her husband, actor Peter Hermann.

In June 2006, Hargitay gave birth to her first son, August.

Five years after August was born, in April 2011, Hargitay and Hermann adopted daughter Amaya Josephine Hermann.

“I’m deliriously happy. From the minute she was born, she was just surprisingly alert and so full of love,” Hargitay told PEOPLE at the time.

Six months later, their family grew again when they adopted Andrew.

“We never in a million years thought it would happen this quickly, but something inside of us knew that this was right, and we said, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’ ” she recalled. “We knew this was our guy. It felt divinely right.”

Ice-T has portrayed the no-nonsense Odafin “Fin” Tutuola since season 2.

In real life, the iconic rapper and actor is the dad to three kids: two daughters and a son.

He first became a parent while in high school in 1976, when his older daughter LeTesha Marrow — whom he shares with his high school girlfriend, Adrienne — was born.

In 1991, he had a son, Tracy Jr., with ex-girlfriend Darlene Ortiz, and in 2015, Ice-T and his wife, Coco Austin, welcomed his younger daughter, Chanel Nicole.

“When I had my first kid I was in the middle of the wildness of becoming Ice-T, all the people that were after me, and I had my head down,” he told PEOPLE in 2016. “I really wasn’t concentrating on them, I was concentrating on survival.”

Ice-T became a grandfather in 1995 when LeTesha welcomed a son, Elyjah Marrow.

Peter Scanavino plays ADA Dominick “Sonny” Carisi Jr.

Scanavino has been married to his wife, artist Lisha Bai, since July 2011. The couple have three kids.

The actor keeps his children out of the public eye, but in November 2024, he did open up to PEOPLE about how he looks to his friend and costar, Hargitay, as a parenting role model.

“She’s a really inquisitive, strong person that’s open to all kinds of different things, and I think that’s just invaluable as a friend, as a parent, as an actor,” he said. “And I have a few role models in my life as a parent, and she’s definitely one of them.”

Kevin Kane portrays Detective Terry Bruno.

Kane is married to actress Francis Benhamou, and the couple share one daughter, whose name they have not made public.

While he has kept his child out of the spotlight, during a May 2024 interview on New York Living, Kane did mention how his role on SVU has helped him with being a parent.

“I have a six year old daughter, she’s usually four steps ahead of me, and since Terry Bruno she’s only two steps,” he said during his appearance.

Kelli Giddish plays NYPD Detective Amanda Rollins.

Giddish is the mom to three sons: Ludo, Charlie and Oldie. She shares her two oldest, Ludo and Charlie, with her ex-husband, Lawrence Faulborn, and her youngest, Oldie, with Beau Richards, her second husband.

She and her first husband, Faulborn, welcomed their first son, Ludo Faulborn, in October 2015, followed by their second son, Charlie Ralph Faulborn, in November 2018.

In June 2023, she and her second husband, Richards, welcomed their son, Oldie Richards.

The actress had all three of her sons while starring on SVU, which she thinks might be a TV record.

“My husband is like, ‘I’m thinking it might be a record that one actress has had three babies on one show,’ ” she told PEOPLE at the Law & Order: SVU 25th-anniversary celebration in January 2024. “Is that a record, by the way?”

“The love and support that I felt weighing 180 pounds on a national TV show on network TV,” she continued. “It didn’t even faze me … they were all there to love and support me and I was breastfeeding on set and it just worked seamlessly.”

Christopher Meloni’s 2 children

Meloni has been married to artist Sherman Williams since 1995, and they have two kids together.

In 2001, the couple welcomed their daughter, Sophia, followed by their son, Dante, in 2004.

I always knew I wanted kids, as did my wife,” Meloni told PEOPLE in October 2022. “My mother always used to say to me, ‘I’ve learned so much from you kids,’ and I didn’t get it. Now I get it.”

While discussing fatherhood during a March 2014 USA Today interview, Meloni admitted, “I think my kids would call me a little crazy.”

“I’m very physical, very affectionate. I’m also very disciplined and focused on education,” he continued. “That’s one thing that was instilled in me, one place in life where there’s no compromise.”
