America’s Got Talent has a new champion!
The milestone 20th season came to a close on Wednesday, Sept. 24, naming singer Jessica Sanchez as their winner. Sanchez beat out runner up, freestyle rapper Chris Turner, and walks away with the title of AGT champion, as well as the $1 million grand prize.
She immediately broke down in tears when host Terry Crews announced her name, telling him: “I’m sorry, I’m really emotional, this is amazing. Thank you so much!”
The moment was equally exciting for judge Sofía Vergara, who gave Sanchez her Golden Buzzer earlier in the season during the audition rounds.
Sanchez had a remarkable journey on AGT, returning to the series nearly 20 years after she first competed as a 10-year-old on season 1. She impressed the judges along the way with her vocal chops — and the fact that she was competing in the final weeks of her pregnancy with her first child.
“This has been 20 years in the making, this would mean everything,” Sanchez said before learning she had won the competition on Wednesday night.

Heading into the night’s finale, 10 finalists remained — Sanchez, Turner, singer Jourdan Blue, singer Micah Palace, Leo High School Choir, LED dance group LightWire, rapper Mama Duke, variety act Sirca Marea, musician Steve Ray Ladson and dance group Team Recycled.
Terry then narrowed down the acts to the top five, with Turner, Sanchez, LightWire, Jourdan Blue, and Leo High School Choir moving through.
From there, Terry revealed the act finishing in fifth place was LightWire. In fourth place was Leo High School Choir, followed by Jourdan Blue in third place.
With Sanchez and Turner remaining as the final two acts, audiences were on the edge of the seat to find out who would win the title of AGT champion. Finally, Terry revealed Sanchez was the season 20 winner.
Aside from a new winner being named, the night was filled with plenty of entertainment and guest appearances. The evening kicked off with multi-platinum musician Manuel Turizo performing with Micah Palace and Grammy-nominated artist Aloe Blacc singing with the Leo High School Choir.
Jourdan Blue took the stage with The Script singer Danny O’Donoghue to perform their single “Breakeven”, which fans likely remember Jourdan performed during his audition. Things got better for him as the lead singer revealed the band would like to take Jourdan on tour.
Grammy nominated singer Leona Lewis performed alongside Lightwire, Grammy Award-winning singer Ciara lit up the stage alongside Team Recycled, and season 19 winner Richard Goodall returned to sing his new original single “Long Time Coming” beside Journey rocker Neal Schon.
There were also performances from magicians/AGT alumni Piff the Magic Dragon, Shin Lim, and Mat Franco, and trap choir/AGT alumni Sainted teamed up with season 20 finalist Mama Duke for a song.
