When Do New Episodes Come Out?

NEED TO KNOW

  • Season 5 of Apple TV+’s thriller series Slow Horses premiered on Sept. 24
  • The streamer will release episodes weekly until the finale on Oct. 29
  • Adapted from Mick Herron’s Slough House novel series, season 5 follows his 2018 book London Rules

Slow Horses has returned to the small screen — and this season promises to be even more outrageous with cocky tech whiz Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung) stepping into a more central role.

“It was just the right moment for him to come forward,” showrunner Will Smith told SlashFilm in September 2025. “Chris is so brilliant and I just knew Chris was going to shine and fly. It’s such a hard part to play, that, because it could easily be just gross and offensive and unbelievable. And he invests it with such reality … It’s so maddening.”

The Emmy-winning thriller series premiered in 2022 and follows a group of dysfunctional British intelligence agents who were banished to a “dumping ground department of MI5 known affectionately as Slough House” for their “career-ending mistakes.”

Despite their perceived lack of skills, the team — led by the cantankerous Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman) — finds themselves “blundering around the smoke and mirrors of the espionage world,” per Apple TV+.

Slow Horses was adapted from Mick Herron’s book series Slough House, and season 5 will follow the events of his 2018 book London Rules.

The British spy thriller returned to Apple TV+ for its fifth season on Sept. 24. According to the series’ official synopsis, the show starts with a highly suspicious plot twist: Roddy Ho has a glamorous girlfriend.

“When a series of increasingly bizarre events occur across the city, it falls to the Slow Horses to work out how everything is connected,” the description continues. “After all, Lamb knows that in the world of espionage, the London Rules — cover your back — always apply.”

Smith told SlashFilm that he wanted to shift to a lighter storyline after the darkness of season 4, which was based on Herron’s 2017 book Spook Street.

“I just think you can’t do the same thing,” the showrunner said. “Spook Street was just phenomenal and it was just so dark and personal and there was so much hurt and pain in it … And it just feels like a great thing to go in a different direction.”

He added, “You think, ‘Well, a series where Roddy Ho gets a girlfriend is automatically going to be funnier than a series where David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce) has dementia and people are trying to kill him.’ ”

Like the rest of Slow Horses‘ seasons, there are six episodes in season 5. Though some may consider that a little light for a drama series these days, director Adam Randall said it’s all by design, thanks to Oldman.

“In effect these are six-hour movies,” he told Gold Derby in June 2025. “That was one of the things that [Oldman] was adamant about, that he wanted one director for all six [episodes] and to treat them like a movie.”
