  • Will & Grace offered no shortage of laughter after it premiered 27 years ago
  • The NBC sitcom starred Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes
  • In addition to the series regulars, several other stars — including Harry Connick Jr., Leigh-Allyn Baker and Bobby Cannavale — played recurring characters

Will & Grace became an instant hit and broke barriers when it premiered 27 years ago on Sept. 21, 1998.

The NBC sitcom followed a group of best friends as they navigated their love lives, careers and friendships. The series starred Eric McCormack as Will Truman, Debra Messing as Grace Adler, Megan Mullally as Karen Walker and Sean Hayes as Jack McFarland.

As the show played out, all four friends went through various relationships and introduced new members to their tight-knit friend group. Some of these characters included Marvin “Leo” Markus (Harry Connick Jr.), Ellen (Leigh-Allyn Baker) and Vince D’Angelo (Bobby Cannavale), among many others.

The original series aired for eight seasons until May 2006 and took a decade-long hiatus before it returned for three seasons from 2017 to 2020. During its time on air, the show won several Emmy awards and received high praise for its complex characters.

While the show stars McCormack as a gay lawyer, in reality, he was previously married to Janet Leigh Holden McCormack for 26 years. Meanwhile, Hayes has been with his husband, Scott Icenogle, for nearly two decades, and Mullally has also been going strong with Nick Offerman since 2000.

Here’s everything to know about the real-life loves of the Will & Grace cast.

McCormack, who played Will Truman, doesn’t appear to be in a serious relationship. The actor was last photographed holding hands with a woman in New York City in February 2025, but he has not shared any information on his most recent relationship status.

Up until 2023, McCormack was in a 26-year relationship with Janet Leigh Holden McCormack. The former couple met on the set of the CBS TV series Lonesome Dove and married in 1997.

In November 2023, Janet filed for divorce from McCormack and cited “irreconcilable differences,” per court documents obtained by PEOPLE at the time. Six months after filing for divorce, Janet joined her estranged husband at the Elton John AIDS Foundation 2024 Oscars viewing party in March 2024.

The former couple are parents to one child: son Finnigan Holden McCormack (who was born in 2002).

Debra Messing

Messing, who played Grace Adler, appears to be single and prioritizing her career. The actress was previously married to screenwriter Daniel Zelman, whom she met at New York University in 1990.

Messing and Zelman married in September 2000 and went on to welcome one son, Roman, in 2004. They separated in 2011 and finalized their divorce in 2016.

“We both wanted it to last forever, and it’s a sad thing that it wasn’t able to go the course,” she reflected in a 2013 interview with More magazine. “Part of me will always contend with guilt that I wasn’t able to give my son the fantasy that my parents were able to give me.”

After her marriage to Zelman, Messing dated her Smash costar Will Chase from 2011 to 2014.

Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman

Mullally, who played Karen Walker, has been in a relationship with fellow actor and comedian Offerman for more than two decades. The couple met while starring in the play The Berlin Circle in 2000.

After initially starting off as friends, they turned their relationship romantic and got engaged in 2002. The In the Motherhood actress and the Parks and Recreation actor had a surprise wedding at their home in Los Angeles in September 2003.

As both Mullally and Offerman are comedic actors, they’ve appeared in several television shows and films together — including him making a cameo on Will & Grace and her having a recurring role in Parks and Recreation.

My favorite thing to do is just stay home with the dogs and read or watch movies and be together,” Mullally told PEOPLE in 2016. “We really like each other, and we try to treat each other well. I feel like Nick and I have the best relationship and the best marriage.”

Hayes, who played Jack McFarland, is married to Scott Icenogle. The Emmy-winner and the award-winning composer met around 2006 when Icenogle was working as a DJ on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and Hayes was a guest.

“I spoke to Ellen, and I was like, ‘Oh, he’s cute and nice and seems funny,’ ” Hayes told PEOPLE in 2018. “And it sounds really corny and cheesy to say it, but I saw him, and I knew that that’s the type of person I need to be with because — this is the corny part — because I know he’ll make me better, and he’s a very grounded, stable person, and I’m a crazy actor.”

After dating for eight years, the couple married in a private ceremony in November 2014. Both Hayes and Icenogle frequently support each other at events and share sweet messages about the other on social media.

Connick Jr., who played Marvin “Leo” Markus, has been in a decades-long relationship with his wife, Jill Goodacre. The Grammy-winner and the former Victoria’s Secret model met in 1990 during a chance encounter at a hotel in Los Angeles.

“What’s really funny is that [Jill] called her mom that night and said, ‘I met the guy I’m going to marry.’ Of course, she didn’t let me know,” he said of their meeting to Glamour in a 2007 interview.

Connick publicly professed his love for his then-girlfriend when he wrote the song “Jill” about her in 1991. The couple married in New Orleans in 1994 and have welcomed three daughters together: Georgia Tatum (in April 1996), Sarah Kate (in September 1997) and Charlotte (in June 2002).

In July 2024, Connick reflected on their relationship while celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary.

“We trust each other, we love each other, we communicate,” he told PEOPLE at the time. “But when you say it’s a rule, it’s almost like we got to adhere to this. We don’t really roll like that. We just wake up every day and we’re thankful for each other and try to be good parents and good spouses to one another.”

Leigh-Allyn Baker and Keith Kaufmann

Baker, who played Ellen, has been married to husband Keith Kaufmann since March 2004. The couple share two sons: Griffin (born in 2009) and Baker James (born in 2012). Baker has previously advocated for the support of kids with dyspraxia, as her eldest son was diagnosed with the neurodevelopmental disorder.

Baker frequently expresses her love of being a mother while also sharing rare insights into her relationship with Kaufmann. For Valentine’s Day 2024, Baker posted a montage video with Kaufmann and reflected on their marriage.

“I remember when #valentinesday was just an ugly reminder that Mr. Right was just a person that other girls met,” she captioned the video. “Then I had a really good day! And it all turned around. Things can change on a dime. And almost 20 years later… here we are.”

Bobby Cannavale and Rose Byrne

Cannavale, who played Vince D’Angelo, has been in a relationship with fellow actress Rose Byrne since 2012. The Nurse Jackie actor and the Bridesmaids actress hit it off after meeting through mutual friends in the fall of 2012.

Cannavale and Byrne went on to welcome their first son, Rocco, in February 2016 and their second son, Rafael, in November 2017. Although they are both actors who frequently support each other at events, they keep most of their relationship out of the spotlight.

“We couldn’t be from more different parts of the world, you know?” Byrne told InStyle in 2017. “When something is special, it’s hard to articulate it, but I feel really lucky.”

Prior to his relationship with Byrne, Cannavale was married to actress Jenny Lumet from 1994 to 2003. The former couple share a son, Jake Cannavale (born in May 1995).
