Baywatch is returning to our screens very soon!
On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Fox Entertainment revealed that a reboot of the famous action-drama series has been greenlit nearly 25 years after the original came to an end. According to the press release, it is set to debut with a 12-episode season featuring a “hot new cast, adrenaline, romance, slo-mo spectacle and the iconic red swimsuit!”
“In its first run, Baywatch defined an entire era of beach life and elevated lifeguards to an iconic status,” Michael Thorn, President of FOX Television Network, said in a press release. “Now, with our partners at Fremantle, this television juggernaut is set for a modern-day comeback.”

Labeling Baywatch as “a treasured asset” and “one of the most iconic series in television history globally,” the new series will be executive produced by Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Dante Di Loreto, Doug Schwartz and Matt Nix, who will also serve as showrunner.
“The series reboot will celebrate the franchise’s enduring legacy, while re-energizing it for today’s global audience,” the official logline reads. “Fans can expect all the adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry and beachside heroics that defined the original — now with an entirely new cast, contemporary trappings, tensions and challenges, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California’s shoreline.”
The new iteration is slated to arrive in time for the 2026-2027 TV season!
Baywatch first aired in 1989 and ran for 11 seasons until its conclusion in 2001. The lifeguard drama followed stars like David Hasselhoff — whose often shirtless time as the sand-and-surf sweetheart Mitch Buchannon made him a pop culture icon — along with beach bombshells Carmen Electra as Lani McKenzie and Pamela Anderson as C.J. Parker.
The original also featured Michael Newman as Michael “Newmie” Newman, Alexandra Paul as lifeguard Stephanie Holden, Nicole Eggert as Roberta “Summer” Quinn and Jeremy Jackson as Mitch Buchannon’s young son, Hobie.
Others included Jaason Simmons, David Charvet, Yasmine Bleeth and Gregory Alan Williams.

Decades later, the show remains one of the most-watched TV series. It even spawned a brief spinoff series, Baywatch Nights, in the 90s and a big-screen adaptation featuring a new generation of seaside stunners in 2017.

In August 2024, a month before the 35th anniversary of the show’s premiere, the original cast looked back on their life-changing roles in an ABC News Studios docuseries, After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun. In the special, creator Douglas Schwartz revealed that it had up to 1.2 billion viewers per week.
“That was the highest volume of viewers of any show ever in the history of television,” he said.
David Chokachi, who played Cody Madison, added, “I look back and was like, there really was no better job than Baywatch.”
Baywatch can be streamed on Tubi.
