Police in England have launched an investigation following the death of a 17-year-old girl who was discovered deceased the day after being reported missing.
The teenager was discovered at an address on Whalley Close in the town of Ashton-under-Lyne in Greater Manchester at about 9 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, according to a Greater Manchester Police press release.
“Despite the best efforts of emergency service workers, the girl sadly died at the scene,” per the release.
Police have not released her full name but believe it is a teen named Catherine, who was reported missing on Saturday, Sept. 20.
Her next of kin was notified and “officers are supporting them,” according to the release.
The Greater Manchester Police also announced the arrest of a 55-year-old man, who has yet to be identified, on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody.

Police said the teen’s cause of death “remains unclear and detectives are keeping an open mind,” according to the release.
“Firstly, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the young person who has tragically lost their life, who we sadly believe was missing Catherine,” Detective Chief Inspector Anna Barker said. “Although we have a man in custody, our investigation team is keeping an open mind and are following several lines of enquiry.”
