Wedding Planner Shares How to Tell If a Couple ‘Will Divorce’

A wedding planner says there are red flags that can signal a marriage is doomed even as the couple is saying “I do.”

Wedding planner Robin Yarusso — who has planned about 100 weddings and 25-30 proposals — shared four of these signs in a viral TikTok video, and noted that she’s seen these things happen “time and time again” with brides and grooms that get divorced later on.

In the video, which earned over 3.1 million views, she said the first sign of disaster is “smashing cake in each other’s face.” She explained that while she doesn’t know “what it represents” in a marriage, “none of my brides and grooms that did that are still together.”

“If the bride looks upset, like ‘Oh my gosh,’ and you didn’t want that to happen — I haven’t had a single couple survive that,” she told Today.

She told the outlet that the outcome is different if the bride and groom both agreed to the cake smashing, as that shows good communication. However, “if they didn’t agree on it, didn’t discuss it, or if one said ‘no’ and it still happens, then it’s disrespectful.”

The second red flag she noticed was if a bride or groom wasn’t “respectful of the budget, but the other person is,” because that could be a large indicator that the two could face financial disagreements in the future.

“So, if I have a bride that’s calling me on the side, being like, ‘let’s add this to the flowers, don’t tell Jim. Let’s do that, don’t [tell]… The ‘don’t tells,’ those people end up getting divorced,” she explained on TikTok.

Another sign that she claims hints at bad fortune is when a bride or groom’s mother oversteps “where she shouldn’t” and “her child doesn’t check her.” She said on TikTok this “usually leads to problems in the marriage” because it signifies boundary issues.

Yarusso also noted that a groom that doesn’t take part in wedding planning or doesn’t show that he cares about the process can also be a bad thing.

“And I don’t mean like, ‘Oh honey it’s your big day, you pick whatever flowers you want.’ I mean, his one job was to pick the DJ and we’re a week before the wedding and he hasn’t gotten that done,” she explained on TikTok. “That husband is completely checked out.”

She told Today that the fifth sign that a couple likely won’t make it is when there is drama — especially if it is started by a bride or groom — at a wedding, and if their behaviors are not aligned.

“A large wedding party usually has a ton of drama,” Yarusso said. “The more drama there is, the worse. If one (member) of the couple ends up extremely intoxicated at the wedding, that’s usually not a good sign … it’s telling me that they aren’t aligned in behaviors.”
