The Summer I Turned Pretty might be over, but there’s more to come.
Following the premiere of the finale of the hit Prime Video series on Sept. 17, Lola Tung, Christopher Briney and Gavin Casalegno stopped by the Today show alongside book author and showrunner Jenny Han on Thursday, Sept. 18, to break down their final moments as Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah — and what to expect from the forthcoming The Summer I Turned Pretty film.
“I mean, not much,” Tung, 22, said when asked what she can tease of the film, which was announced the day before. “We’ve known for a little bit but it’s fun that it’s finally out there in the world. I guess [Jenny] would know the most about it.”
“I can say that there is another big milestone for Belly, so we’ll continue with that journey,” Han added when asked if fans can expect a wedding in the movie, which will serve as the conclusion of the story.
Prime Video previously announced that the beloved series based on Han’s book trilogy would have a forthcoming movie installment, seeing both Tung and Briney, 27, returning as Belly and Conrad, respectively.
“It’s still a little too soon to say,” Han told Today of where she is in the writing process. “But Sarah Kucserka, my co-showrunner, and I have finished a draft, so we’re chugging along.”
As for whether the film would be arriving in 2026 or 2027, Han confirmed that next year is off the table. “We don’t know when it’s coming out, but not next year. Still have to make it,” she said.

Han previously said in a Wednesday statement that she thought a film could give the series “its proper due” and that she was grateful for Prime Video for “continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.” The news arrived just hours after the final episode of the TV show dropped.
Amazon MGM head of film Courtenay Valenti and Vernon Sanders, Global Head of Television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios also commented on the news in a press release.
“The Summer I Turned Pretty has struck a chord with audiences everywhere, creating moments of joy, nostalgia, and connection that have made it a global sensation,” their statement read. “We’re proud of the series’ extraordinary success and couldn’t be more excited to partner again with Jenny Han to bring fans an unforgettable next chapter.”

In the finale, Belly and Conrad finally ended up together — just like they do in We’ll Always Have Summer, the third book in Han’s bestselling book trilogy of books — but it happened a bit differently than it unfolded on the page.
Instead of getting engaged and then married at the Cousins Beach house like they do in the book, Conrad surprised Belly in Paris, where she had fled after calling off her wedding to Jeremiah, and after a day playing tourists together and crashing her birthday dinner, he again confessed his love for her, and they spent the night together.
Belly was hesitant to commit to Conrad again in the aftermath, but when he left her apartment to go to Brussels, she chased him down, boarded his train, and said “I love you” back to him.
The episode ended with a flash-forward of Conrad and Belly a few years in the future returning to the summer house together for the first time as a couple.
Tung, 22, told PEOPLE that her last day on set as Belly, the character she’s played since she was 18, was very emotional.

“I get emotional on the last day every season,” she admitted. “You’ve just spent an entire summer with everybody, and telling the story, and it’s emotional. It’s like, months of your life working on something so intensely, so I always cry.”
“I cry about everything — happy, sad. I feel emotions in a big way, and I think I feel grateful for that, because I’m able to sort of really take everything in at the end, which is really nice no matter what.”
