A woman is furious after her brother’s wedding turned into a talent show.

In a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Drama” forum, the groom’s sister shared that she’s upset at the bride’s family for “hijacking the spotlight” during the reception with a “surprise talent show.” She asked users on the platform if she should speak up about her frustration or “just keep quiet” and “let it go.”

The bride’s family is “very into performing arts,” so they put on “skits, dances, or karaoke” at every family gathering, she explained.

“We all knew this going in, but none of us thought it would spill over into the wedding,” the sister of the groom wrote, adding, “The reception went in a direction that none of us were expecting.”

After the newlyweds shared their first dance, one of the bride’s cousins grabbed the microphone and announced that the bride’s family “prepared a little entertainment.”

Initially, the surprise was sweet, with the bride’s young nieces starting the show with a short dance.

“But then it just, kept going,” the groom’s sister remembered.

From poetry to songs to comedy sketches being performed by multiple family members, the “little entertainment” became quite long.

“This went on for over an hour, back-to-back, and the DJ basically had to just stand aside,” the groom’s sister said.

The issue wasn’t just the length of unexpected talent show, but also that it diverted attention away from the bride and groom.

“The awkward part was that my brother and his new wife were basically sidelined during all of this,” the Redditor recalled. “The spotlight completely shifted from them to the performances.”

She continued: “Guests on our side of the family were visibly bored and kept whispering about when the dance floor was going to open. At one point, my grandmother leaned over to me and asked if she could leave early because she didn’t come for a talent show.”

By the time the talent show ended, “a good chunk of guests” had already left the wedding.

“My brother tried to laugh it off and said he didn’t want to hurt his new in-laws’ feelings, but I could tell he was frustrated,” the groom’s sister said. “He and his wife barely got to enjoy their own reception.”

Now, the groom’s sister is debating whether to raise her concerns so that something like this doesn’t “happen again at future events,” or let her brother “deal with it if he feels it’s an issue.”

In the comments section, Reddit users advised the groom’s sister to move on because it’s not her business. They argued that bringing up the reception might turn it into a bigger issue than it is by “driving a wedge between the newlyweds.”

“Not your place. Let it go,” the top comment reads, with another user agreeing, “There is absolutely zero reason for you to insert yourself in this issue.”

They added that reminding the groom about his hijacked reception might “embarrass” him or make him feel worse about the situation. Instead, they suggested she be a supportive listener he can vent to, if he chooses to do so.

“Now it is over, and there is absolutely nothing for you to gain by rubbing salt in his wound,” one person commented.
