A Greek heiress has died at age 30 after she was bitten by an insect in England.

Speaking to Parapolitika, a Greek news outlet, Marissa Laimou’s mother Bessie revealed that her daughter was bitten by an insect, and though she had received medical treatment from a doctor, she died shortly after. Her aunt later shared that Laimou had been found dead by a family friend in her apartment.

“She was bitten by an insect, she was itchy, she went to the doctor, she took antibiotics, she ate, she slept and she never woke up,” said the grieving mother in Greek. “My girl left for nothing,”

According to her mother, Laimou had recently recovered after a breast cancer diagnosis: “My daughter was saved from cancer. My little child,” said Bessie, adding that her daughter was a “diamond.”

Laimou was connected to a prominent Greek shipping dynasty that had operated in the country for several centuries. According to a casting announcement, Laimou was born and raised in London, moving to the United States for high school and an undergraduate degree in musical theater. After college, she returned to London — and she had been cast in one of the titular roles in a production of Romeo & Juliet.

“The entire family is shocked by the sudden death of the daughter of Diamantis and Bessie Laimos,” her great-aunt Chrysanthi Laimos told Parapolitika. “She was a very kind girl, quiet, educated, cultured, modest and simple. She loved art and theater, she was involved in theater. Warm condolences to the family! Strength and courage!”

“She was a little girl with so many gifts, all of England is crying,” a friend of Laimou’s said. “After the cancer, imagine, she didn’t sit still. She was a little child who was always looking for things to do. She had seen so many theaters, operas, ballets, all in London. She was a terrific little girl and now she was getting ready to put on another show.”
