D.D. Lewis, two-time Cowboys Super Bowl champion, dead at 79
D.D. Lewis, a two-time Super Bowl champion linebacker with the Cowboys and an All-American at Mississippi State, died this week, Dallas announced.
He was 79.
Born in Tennessee, Lewis joined Mississippi State in 1965 and became one of the most decorated players in the football program’s history. He racked up accolades that included winning the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1967, the same season he was an All-American first team member.
Lewis was a sixth-round pick of the Cowboys in the 1968 draft, quickly becoming a staple on their defense over the course of a 13-year career — which was interrupted in 1969 when he served in the military. He played double-digit games in every single season with Dallas, missing just four regular-season contests in total.
He helped the Cowboys during a long period of success, as he won two Super Bowls in 1972 and 1978 — appearing in three others — and made seven conference championship games.
Arguably, his biggest individual contribution came during the playoffs after the 1975 season, when he recorded two interceptions in the NFC championship against the Rams to help send Dallas to the big game. In 1984, three years after his final game, Lewis was named to the Cowboys’ Silver Anniversary Team.

Lewis is also remembered for his now-famous quote about the Cowboys’ former home, Texas Stadium.
“Texas Stadium has a hole in its roof so God can watch his favorite team play,” Lewis once quipped to reporters during his career.
He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001 and enshrined in Mississippi State’s Ring of Honor 10 years later.
