Cruise Passenger Dead and Another Injured After Falling During Hike in Alaska

A cruise passenger has died and another has been injured after they fell during a mountainous hike while on a voyage in Alaska.

On Wednesday, Sept. 17, the Alaska State Troopers confirmed in a press release that two cruise ship passengers had been visiting Juneau when they fell from the Mount Roberts trail on Tuesday.

“On Sept. 16, 2025, Alaska State Troopers were notified around 8:10 p.m. about a search and rescue involving two adult males who had fallen from the Mount Roberts trail and slid down the steep mountainside,” the release read.

“One of the men was extracted by Juneau Mountain Rescue and had minor injuries,” officials added, however, 36-year-old Britian Pool from Texas, “had slid further down the mountain and was located by drones” and was found dead “from injuries sustained during the fall.”

PEOPLE has contacted the Alaska Department of Public Safety and the Juneau Police Department for further comment.

“Troopers and JMR volunteers recovered his body. Pool’s remains were transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office and his next of kin was notified,” authorities said. “SEADOGS and Capital City Fire/Rescue also contributed to search and rescue efforts.”

Troopers’ spokesperson Tess Williams told the Associated Press that one of the men had called 911 for help.

According to Williams, the pair had taken a wrong path near a tram that transports passengers between the downtown area where a docking area for cruise ship’s is located and a site on the mountainside that is popular with tourists.

Williams added that the weather conditions were foggy and there was light rain, while it was also dark and the ground was wet, with conditions off trail “slick.”

PEOPLE previously reported in July that the body of  62-year-old cruise ship passenger, Marites Buenafe, was found after she told her family that she was going to hike the Mount Roberts Tramway in Juneau. She had been missing for two days in Alaska.
