The Summer I Turned Pretty has come to an end.

The Prime Video show’s third season was based on We’ll Always Have Summer, the third book of Jenny Han’s bestselling trilogy, and concluded on Sept. 17, finally giving fans an answer about who Belly chooses.

Like the books, the show follows Belly Conklin (Lola Tung) as she navigates her romantic life with brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno). When the season begins, Belly and Jeremiah share a series of romantic moments — all before Conrad comes back into her life, turning their relationship upside down.

Ahead of the show’s July 16 premiere, author Han promised fans that there would be “surprises” for fans of the books in store.

“There are the things that they know and then there are things they think they know, and then there’s going to be, hopefully, things that surprise them,” Han told Entertainment Weekly in March 2025.

We’ll Always Have Summer is the third and final installment in The Summer I Turned Pretty book series. The novel by Han was released in 2011.

We’ll Always Have Summer takes place two years after the second book, It’s Not Summer Without You. In that book, Conrad and Belly fall apart after his mother Susannah’s death, and she begins a relationship with Jeremiah.

In book three, Belly must finally make a decision about which brother she wants to be with.

“After being with Jeremiah for the last two years, [Belly is] almost positive he is her soul mate. Almost,” the book’s summary on Amazon reads. “While Conrad has not gotten over the mistake of letting Belly go, Jeremiah has always known that Belly is the girl for him. Does Jermiah cheat on Belly in The Summer I Turned Pretty book series?

In the third book, We’ll Always Have Summer, Belly attends a party at Jeremiah’s fraternity house. While there, she overhears Lacie Barone — a girl from Jeremiah’s sister sorority — say that she and Jeremiah hooked up while in Cabo for spring break.

Subsequently, Belly confronts Jeremiah, who explains that the hook-up happened while he and Belly were briefly broken up. Belly recalls how she and Jeremiah had gotten into a fight before spring break, and while Jeremiah thought their split was permanent, Belly understood it to be temporary.

Belly, devastated by the betrayal, slaps Jeremiah and breaks up with him.

The situation plays out similarly in the show’s first episode, though it’s revealed that in the on-screen adaptation, Jeremiah actually cheats on Belly not once, but twice.

A couple of days afterwards, Jeremiah and Belly have a heart-to-heart that ends with Jeremiah pulling out a diamond ring and proposing to Belly. Their brief split made Jeremiah realize that he didn’t ever want to be without her.

After Jeremiah and Belly cancel their wedding, the book flashes forward to when Belly is 23 and engaged to Conrad. Although Jeremiah said he never wanted to see Conrad again, it’s revealed that he’s a guest at his brother’s wedding to Belly.

What happens to Belly after she and Jeremiah break up in The Summer I Turned Pretty books?

After the pair split, Belly lives with her friend Anika and studies abroad in Spain during her junior year. While in Spain, Belly and Conrad exchange handwritten letters, which help to re-establish their relationship.

How does The Summer I Turned Pretty show ending differ from the book series?

As promised, the series finale of the Prime Video series closed out Belly’s story differently than the third book did. Conrad showed up at Belly’s doorstep in Paris in the final episode, and they spent the day together playing tourist, while the confessions Conrad made at her wedding lingered in the air. After meeting her Parisian friends — and learning she had broken up with Benito, her Parisian love interest — Conrad and Belly kissed after dancing in the moonlight along the Seine.

They went back to her apartment and spend the night together and Conrad again confessed his love for her, but Belly was unsure. She admitted her fears that their attachment was only a result of their grief over Susannah’s death, but when Conrad left to go to Brussels for a medical conference, she realized she was, of course, still in love with him.

She chased him down at the train station, boarded his train to Brussels and confessed her love right back. The episode — and the series — ended with Belly and Conrad arriving at the Cousins Beach house together as a couple.

The biggest change between the book and the show in the finale episode was that Belly and Conrad did not get engaged or married in the show. Instead, the show closed out with a more open-ended moment for them as a pair.
