Queens pol draws heat over MAHA-inspired proposal to remove fluoride from NYC water

Time to make NYC healthy again?

City Councilman James Gennaro is drawing heat over an apparently MAHA-inspired proposal to remove fluoride from Big Apple drinking water.

Fellow pols accused the Queens Democrat of trying to take a page out of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr.’s book with his longshot bill to rid the city’s municipal water supply of the compound, which helps boost dental health.

“I think Jim’s tinfoil hat may have been strapped on a little too tight when he came up with this one,” fumed one of Gennaro’s colleagues, who requested anonymity.

“I know Jim considers RFK Jr. his mentor but we don’t need this crap in New York City,” the lawmaker told The Post.

As President Trump’s HHS secretary, Kennedy — known for the “Make America Healthy Again” movement — asked the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this year to revise its fluoride recommendations.

Gennaro, who was first elected to the City Council in 2021, has known Kennedy for decades and even endorsed the political scion in the 2024 Democratic presidential primary.

“None of the conspiracy theories surrounding fluoridated water are supported by credible scientific evidence,” the unnamed councilmember seethed.

“Jim is addled and should retire.”

Councilman Lincoln Restler (D-Brooklyn) also slammed the proposal, noting that fluoride has “improved the dental health of millions of New Yorkers regardless of their income or insurance status.”

“We cannot afford to roll back evidence-based public health interventions.”

Gennaro’s bill, first reported by City & State Tuesday, would mandate that the city take fluoride out of its water supply, citing research questioning whether people are getting too much of it and possible risks of overexposure.

The proposed bill would also establish a program to provide free fluoride supplements to individuals who request them.

A rep for Gennaro said the longtime pol has been on the record as having supported fluoridation in the past, but added that “new science has emerged that is worth thoughtful discussion,” shooting down suggestions that Kennedy had any influence on the proposal.

The CDC’s website currently recommends fluoride levels of 0.7 mg/L, the same level of the cavity fighting compound that Big Apple residents find in their tap water.
