Mary Cosby Reveals Which Married ‘RHOSLC’ Star Captain Jason Chambers Was “Checking Out” While Filming ‘Below Deck Down Under’ Crossover

The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City returned for Season 6 this week and while Angie Katsanevas‘ RV trip to a haunted campground was not the luxurious getaway anyone was expecting, Mary Cosby promises that their time aboard the Below Deck Down Under mega-yacht will not disappoint.

For the first time ever, fans will get to see both points of view of a Below Deck vacation when the ladies of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City set sail on a vessel captained by the hunky Jason Chambers. For Cosby, who described their trip as “amazing” in a new interview with Decider, it will be “interesting” to hear what Chambers and his crew had to say about her and her co-stars behind closed doors. Plus, Cosby teased that the Australian-born television personality was “checking out” Bronwyn Newport. “But she’s married, so that can’t happen,” Cosby added, joking that Britani Bateman was “lapping like a dog” at the captain and despite the fact that he “got along” with Heather Gay, she didn’t “see them as a match.”

Cosby, for her part, has come a long way since telling Jen Shah she smelled like hospital in Season 1, Episode 1. First turning heads for marrying her step-grandfather, Cosby’s comedic timing and brutally unfiltered thoughts quickly made her a fan-favorite. While her star-power has been apparent to viewers from day one, Cosby said her time on the show is just starting to feel “more and more natural.” For example, when she returned as a full-time cast member in Season 5—she did not appear in Season 3 and starred as a “friend of” in Season 4—she shared a heartbreaking conversation between her and her 22-year-old son about his drug addiction.

“People responded in such a major, loving, supportive way that I can’t even describe it,” Cosby said. “I hope they feel our thankfulness. I hope they feel that we did it for someone. I told him, ‘If we help one person then we did our part.’”

When Cosby stopped by Decider’s studio ahead of the RHOSLC Season 6 premiere, she gave us an update on how Robert Jr. is doing, revealed where she currently stands with Katsanevas after the trailer teased a fall-out between them, and shared her true thoughts on Bateman. Check out the full interview below.

DECIDER: I’m so excited to have you here for the first time. Fans just love you on this show. How did it feel going into another season of reality TV with these women?

MARY COSBY: Oh, I wasn’t expecting that question. It was great. It’s becoming more and more natural. So, I’m just bracing myself for some and then ready to receive others.

The first episode kicks off with you and Angie taking her RV to pick everyone up for the first cast trip. You said that you don’t love RV-living as an adult with eight other women because you can hear their thoughts. Whose thoughts would you be most afraid of hearing and why?

I would probably be afraid of hearing Lisa’s thoughts because they’d probably be a little scantless. Or maybe Braunwyn. I think she thinks more than what she says and it would probably be interesting.

Whitney decided to prank everyone with a fake FBI raid that turned out to be male strippers. You did not seem too excited about that. What was going through your head at that moment?

Where’s Jen Shah? What are we doing? What is going on right now? This is not OK. I felt fear in the beginning. Like, is this real? And they were like, “They want Whitney!” And I was like, “OK, this is fake.” And then I got it.

When you signed on to co-host this trip with Angie, what were you and everyone else expecting? Is there anything you would’ve done differently?

I would have actually picked everyone up in the RV and then drove them to a private plane and then flown them to a private destination. It probably would have been ideal for me to not actually drive the entire trip in the RV. It was not what I was [expecting]. But it happened and it was beautiful.

At the picnic table, everyone was really going in on Lisa for not being there. What do you think was the real reason she skipped out on the trip?

I don’t know. I can only speculate. I don’t know what her real reasoning was. I didn’t think it was fair for us, but I just accepted it because that’s what happened. After a minute, I just gave it no mind and just kept moving. She wasn’t there, but it was kind of her loss.

She missed out!

I know. She did. Because we had fun.

I know you and Angie were very close at the time. What did you think about her comparing Lisa to Jen Shah?

That wasn’t right. You don’t compare no one to Jen Shaw. That’s not OK. I feel like Angie sometimes can be reckless. I can, too. But that was a little much.

We did see her immediately walk it back after she said it.

I just feel like Lisa runs a real business. And Jen did not. I just think to compare the two was just a little outlandish and a little much. [It’s] Angie just being Angie.

You and Britani got off on the wrong foot last season, and judging by your reaction to her “announcement” a.k.a. relationship status update in the first episode, it seems like there still might be some tension there. What are your current thoughts on Britani?

Do I have to say it? I just wish we were cartoons. You know how cartoons body slam people swing them around? That’s my real intimate thought. I wish I could body slam her. No, I’m kidding. Or poof her, be gone. But no, I’m just my authentic self and I need that energy to come back to me. I don’t need fake. I need a real, genuine person wanting to know who I am. And I just never got that from her.

Some people just don’t mesh and that’s OK.

It is. And it has to be with me because I’m not for everyone and everyone’s not for me, and that’s OK. That’s life. And she falls in that category.

Speaking of friendships, you and Angie got really close last year–but in the trailer for Season 6, we saw that you two hit a bump in the road. What can you say about that? And where do you currently stand with Angie?

As you will see, she does a couple of things to agitate me on this journey. I love Angie and I feel like we are close and we’re getting closer. So, when you really authentically get close to someone, you have rifts, you have fights, you have disagreements, and that’s kind of what you will see in this season.

It seems like a very sisterly friendship. One minute you can fight and the next you’re best friends again.

Yeah. Because you’re open and you’re vulnerable and they can do things that hurt your feelings. I’m used to being guarded. If I don’t like you, you can’t hurt me. If I don’t know you, you can’t hurt me. But when I let my walls down and let you in, then you can get to me and I’m like, “No, this is what I didn’t want.” But I think Angie is amazing. I love her, I will always love her, and I think she’s a great addition to the show.

I love this friendship you guys have. It’s very refreshing.

Good, good. I don’t think it’s going anywhere because it’s real. It’s a real friendship.

You and Meredith had a little tiff last year. How is your friendship doing today?

Meredith and I are doing excellent. Yeah, I love Mer Mer.

Did you watch Brooks on Next Gen NYC?

I know. She asked me and I had to say no. I was like, “Oh, Meredith, I’m so sorry.” I’m trying to be supportive, but I have a lot going on. I don’t even really turn my TV on until I have to. I don’t watch TV, so I don’t know a lot about it.

I’m very excited for this Below Deck Down Under crossover. I know that any single Bravoleb is usually thirsting over Captain Jason. Do you think any of your single co-stars would be a good match for him?

No. I just don’t see it. I don’t feel it. I don’t know. I mean, he really checked out – well, maybe I shouldn’t say that. He was checking out Bronwyn. But she’s married, so that can’t happen. But I didn’t see him checking out anyone else. I was, like, sizing him. I’m like, “Who is he looking at? Who’s he checking out?” Him and Heather got along good, but I don’t see them as a match. Britani, of course. You know Britani was lapping like a dog. But that took a turn for the worse.

I can’t wait to watch.

It’s amazing. What I love about it is that Below Deck will have their episode, and then we have ours. So, you get to see both sides of the scenario. What they say about us is going to be interesting to me. I feel like I had the most manners. I hope they say that. You guys are in for a treat, though. You are. We’ve got some juicy, juicy things coming.

People always want to know if Monica Garcia is going to come back. I know you sort of stayed friendly with her after she left the show. Would you be open to having her back in the group? Or has that ship sailed forever?

Absolutely. I love Monica. I would love to have her back. I try not to think on it or talk about it because I don’t know how it’s looking. It’s not my decision, but I have no ill will with Monica at all. I think she made a good fit for this cast. However, you know, it didn’t work out.

Are you guys still in touch now?

She texts me quite often. I respond and tell I love her and I’m praying for her and stuff like that, but not on the phone chatting it up.

It seems like we’re going to be going back into your church this season. What was it like to invite cameras back in?

It was almost like a full circle to how this started, how I started, and how I came onto the show. That’s a part of my life. It’s a part of me, and it’s a part of who I am. I can’t live without it. So to have it back on TV and back on the screens and actually having the women there and having a full-blown service was beautiful.

It’s so nice to see that because, like you said, that is such a big part of your life.

I know, because I had to cut it out for a minute. I was like, “No. No cameras.” But also, we did a lot of renovation, too. So I’m excited about that. It’s going to be good.

Before I let you go, I want to ask you about your son, Robert Jr. How is he doing?

Robert is doing the best he can do. It’s his journey. I can’t make his mind up for him. I can’t walk him through it. He has to do it himself. That’s why I say he’s doing the best he can. He’s trying, and that’s all I can ask for him. So, I mean, it is what it is. It’s still, you know, tears. But I feel like it gets worse before it gets better. It’s his journey and I think he’s doing excellent for his journey. [There are] hurdles that he has to still climb and [it’s] just making up your mind. Just having a made-up mind. I feel like that is the whole sole purpose. If your mind is made up, there’s nothing you can’t do. I feel like if his mind’s not made up and he still enjoys it, if he’s still enjoying it and he’s still thinking it’s OK, then there’s no growth. But he’s doing the best as he can. He says, “Mom, my mind’s made up.” And I’m like, “Well, it doesn’t look like it.” I have to see it, too. Not just hear it. So we’re kind of in that phase. But he’s doing good, I can’t complain.

I thought it was so brave and inspiring what you two were able to share and how vulnerable you were able to be last season. What has the support from the fandom, your peers, and the world meant to you and Robert Jr.?

People responded in such a major, loving, supportive way that I can’t even describe it. I hope they feel our thankfulness. I hope they feel that we did it for someone. I told him, “If we help one person then we did our part.” It’s all the Lord’s work, at the end of the day. If you want to do it, if it feels embarrassing, but you feel like it’ll help someone, then you do it. And that’s what we did. We both decided on it and we really didn’t care about the outcome. We just did because we knew we were in that moment and it happened. For me, it’ll be one of the most sincere, beautiful, heartbreaking scenes I’ve ever done in my life. And it was real. We came from a real place, and we didn’t even expect to do all that. But we did. I watched and I was bawling. I was like, “That’s me, though. Why am I bawling in myself?” But it was excellent.

Is there anything else you can tease about the rest of this season?

The only thing I will say is that it’s better than last. It just keeps getting better. And you have to tune in because you can’t keep up. It packed. It’s just packed with entertainment, laughter, love, enemies, frenemies. It’s just got a lot of ups. It’s all over the place. You know this cast. It’s everywhere. Like us.
