Deion Sanders swapping quarterbacks again in Colorado roller coaster

Life without Shedeur Sanders isn’t so easy.

Colorado coach Deion Sanders is flipping back to former starting quarterback Kaidon Salter for this week’s home game vs. Wyoming after relegating him to backup duties just one week ago, according to CBS.

The Buffaloes (1-2) now have more quarterback changes than wins this season.

Many expected a somewhat transitional year in Boulder after Shedeur and Travis Hunter, the two-way phenom and reigning Heisman winner, left the program for the NFL this offseason.

Salter, a senior, transferred to Colorado after four seasons with Liberty and won the job in a battle with star freshman prospect Julian Lewis, ranked No. 12 by ESPN, and 2024 backup Ryan Staub.

The former Liberty star had a solid debut in the team’s 27-20 season-opening loss to Georgia Tech, completing 17 of 28 passes for 159 yards and one touchdown.

He also ran 13 times for 43 yards and one score.

All three quarterbacks then saw action in a 31-7 win over Delaware the following week, with Staub starring by completing 7 of 10 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns.

“Staub don’t trip,” Deion said after the game, per ESPN. “He’s just unflappable, man.”

Reports emerged at the time that Deion considered starting Staub for the Big 12 opener last week against Houston, and he lashed out at the media.

“You know, in today’s media, we don’t care about being correct anymore, we just want to be first,” he said last week. “And there’s no subjection to you when you’re wrong. Nobody says nothing, you just go with it. I’m not saying that’s the case, but that’s where we are in media.

“Nobody gives a dern about being correct, and right. Everybody just wants to be first. That don’t make no sense to me. I would love the integrity we once had with media, I would love that.”

Staub indeed started the game but couldn’t galvanize the team, completing 19 of 35 passes for 204 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in a 36-20 loss.

That performance may have spooked Deion, and he’s now reportedly going back to Salter with Colorado aiming to even its record.
