Sydney Sweeney as a housemaid with secrets. Amanda Seyfried as her manipulative employer. Who’s ready for a twisty thriller?

The Housemaid, from director Paul Feig and screenwriter Rebecca Sonnenshine, is based on Freida McFadden‘s 2022 bestseller, a psychologically twisted tale with no shortage of surprises, as indicated by the first trailer that dropped Tuesday, Sept. 16.

The glimpse at the big-screen adaptation establishes an air of mystery for maid Millie (Sweeney), the family she works for (Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar) and the house’s groundskeeper (Michele Morrone). Millie “soon learns that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own,” per a synopsis.

Speaking to PEOPLE at the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere of his film Another Simple Favor in March, Feig, 62, teased that the team behind The Housemaid “did a really good job” in translating McFadden’s thriller for the screen. “Because it’s nerve-wracking — like, it’s easy to make something out of a book that’s not good; when a book’s really good, it’s like, oh boy.”

In the lead role, Sweeney, 28, “was very attentive to it, and I think we hit just the perfect balance,” he added at the time.

Erin Westerman, president of production for the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, previously described Sweeney and Seyfried, 39, as “perfect” for their opposing roles. “They’re both mysterious, nuanced and incredibly skilled at becoming characters who don’t reveal everything right away,” she said.

In PEOPLE’s recent first look at the movie, Seyfried said the movie “captures everything fans loved about the book — the secrets, the tension and the twists.” Added Sweeney, “I can’t wait for fans to see how hard we all worked to bring The Housemaid to life.”

Millie is exactly “the type of character I love to play: complex, strong and with a little something up her sleeve,” the Euphoria star said.

Behind the scenes, Sweeney and Seyfried were “true joys to work with,” said Feig.

“They are both up for anything, and we had so much fun playing with all the twists and turns that the story takes these characters through,” he said. “They both slipped into these challenging roles effortlessly and took full ownership of them. We couldn’t have had a better time together making this movie.”

The Housemaid is in theaters Dec. 19.
