Hollywood Pays Tribute to Robert Redford Following His Death at 89

Stars in Hollywood are paying their respects following the death of film legend Robert Redford.
On Tuesday, Sept. 16, the actor and director died in his home in Utah, at the age of 89.
“Robert Redford passed away on Sept. 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” Cindi Berger, chairman and CEO of Rogers & Cowan PMK, told PEOPLE in a statement. “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”

Following the announcement of his death, many celebrities have paid tribute to the icon’s life and legacy.
“Our film, CODA, came to the attention of everyone because of Sundance. And Sundance happened because of Robert Redford. A genius has passed. RIP Robert,” actress Marlee Matlin wrote on X in reference to the non-profit organization, Sundance Institute, which Redford founded in 1981 to support independent filmmakers, composers and theater artists.

Actor and director Ron Howard wrote on X, “#RIP & thank you RobertRedford, a tremendously influential cultural figure for the creative choices made as an actor/producer/director & for launching the Sundance Film Festival, which supercharged America’s Independent Film movement. Artistic Gamechanger.”
Author Stephen King also paid tribute to the The Way We Were star.
“Robert Redford has passed away. He was part of a new and exciting Hollywood in the 70s and 80s. Hard to believe he was 89,” the It creator wrote on X.
Jamie Lee Curtis paid tribute by posting a throwback photo of Redford alongside the caption: A LIFE! FAMILY• ART• TRANSFORMATION • ADVOCACY• CREATION• LEGACY Thank you Robert Redford.”
Rosie O’Donnell celebrated Redford’s romance with Barbra Streisand, The Way We Were, by sharing a photo from the film and writing, “oh hubbell – we will never be the same – goodnight bob – what a legacy ❤️🌹🥲”
CNN anchor Jake Tapper also posted on X, “RIP Robert Redford,” alongside a gif of Redford playing the role of Hubbell Gardiner in The Way We Were.
In a similar sentiment, actor Colman Domingo wrote, “With love and admiration. Thank you, Mr. Redford, for your everlasting impact. Will be felt for generations. R.I.P.”
