Shannon Sharpe rips Travis Kelce for ‘getting lazy’ on play in Chiefs loss
The Travis Kelce pile-on continued well after the Chiefs’ second straight loss of the season Sunday.
Shannon Sharpe lit into the longtime Chiefs tight end for being “lazy with his head” during the team’s 20-17 loss to the Eagles in a highly hyped Super Bowl 2025 rematch, which included a brutal drop in the red zone from Kelce that resulted in a Philly takeaway.
“Kelce has been lazy. He’s getting lazy with his head, and he’s getting lazy with his eyes, he knows in that area of the field, he has to snap his head,” Sharpe told Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson on Sunday’s installment of his “Nightcap” podcast.
“I don’t know why he’s so lazy with his head? There’s nobody inside… why you so lazy? You gotta snap it around… and you took points off the board.”
Down 13-10 early in the fourth quarter, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes fired a pass to the recently engaged Kelce on a 2nd and goal at the Eagles’ six-yard line, where the tight end tried to hang onto the ball before it bobbled into the hands of Philadelphia’s Andrew Makuba, who turned it into a 41-yard return.
“Travis just a little late getting his head around, perfect place to throw the ball if you’re Patrick,” Tom Brady, Fox’s lead NFL analyst, said on the broadcast.
The Eagles capitalized on the play by scoring a touchdown on the ensuing drive and never relinquished the lead to improve to 2-0.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs dropped to 0-2 as the offensive struggles continued amid the absences of wide receivers Rashee Rice, currently serving a six-game suspension, and Xaviery Worthy, ruled out following a Week 1 collision with Kelce.
“Ocho, they’ve got guys. I don’t care how great Mahomes is, he’s not overcoming that,” Sharpe said.
Mahomes, now riding this first three-game losing streak with the Chiefs that extends back to February’s Super Bowl loss, took responsibility for the fateful misconnection with Kelce, whose fiancée, Taylor Swift was in attendence.

“I threw it a tad too early,” Mahomes said. “If I could put it on his body, he can catch it, take the hit, and get into the end zone.”
Mahomes went 16-of-29 for 187 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed for a score.
Kelce finished with four receptions for 61 yards.
