Emmys host Nate Bargatze has a genius — and generous — solution for long speeches

Finally, someone has a solution to the way-too-long acceptance speech epidemic! Because we all know the walk-off music doesn’t work. Emmys host Nate Bargatze announced at the top of the ceremony that he would donate $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Club — but only if the winners keep the gabbing under control. For every winner whose speech goes over the 45 seconds they’re allotted, the comedian said he’ll subtract $1,000 from the $100,000 donation, per second that they keep yapping. On the other hand, for any winner whose speech goes under 45 seconds, Bargatze will add another $1,000 — per second they’re under — to his donation.
