Preview, prediction, what to watch for in Week 2

An inside look at Sunday’s Giants-Cowboys NFL Week 2 matchup at AT&T Stadium:

Marquee matchup

Giants WR Malik Nabers vs. Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs

Nabers innocently enough before his rookie season shared that the one cornerback he was looking forward to going against more than anyone else was Diggs.

This was said as a compliment, but Diggs initially took it as an insult. In their first meeting, Nabers (12-115) had a big game but the Cowboys won and Diggs was impressed.

“I’m looking forward to all the battles we’re going to have,” he said at the time. This is the next installment, as Diggs was hurt and did not play in the rematch last season.

Four downs

Silence of the Lamb: After totaling seven dropped passes in 2024, CeeDee Lamb opened up this season by dropping three passes in the Cowboys’ Week 1 loss to the Eagles. He lines up in the slot nearly half the time, meaning Dru Phillips will get plenty of work against Lamb.

“Great receiver in all aspects,” the second-year nickel back said. “I remember from last year, he’s savvy. He can do almost everything well so it’s kind of just bring your ‘A’ game.”

Is it encouraging that Lamb dropped the ball a week ago? “I wish I could just hope everybody drops the ball, that would be great.,” Phillips said. “You can’t rely on it.”

Lamb, recalling how he exacerbated a shoulder injury last season after a tackle by Phillips, is making this personal. “He tackled me and hurt me,” Lamb said, “so I’ve got something for him.”

Dak attack: Dak Prescott’s 13-game winning streak against the Giants is tied with Tom Brady for the second-longest streak in NFL history for a quarterback over any one team. Brady did it against the Bills from 2003-10. If Prescott gets to No. 14, he will be behind only Bob Griese, who with the Dolphins from 1968-79 won 17 straight over the Bills.

“I hope to keep that going,” Prescott said. “I’m studying, preparing and doing everything I can to make sure I keep that going.” Prescott in 15 career games against the Giants has 29 touchdown passes, eight interceptions and a passer rating of 102.4.

Slay bells: Darius Slayton was on the field for 66 of the 68 snaps in the opener, was targeted only one time and did not have a reception. The Cowboys are down a starting cornerback, with DaRon Bland out with a sprained foot and ankle.

That means untested Reddy Steward is expected to be the replacement for Bland.

The Vikings cut Steward after training camp and the Cowboys claimed him. He has played in one NFL game — as an undrafted rookie in 2024 for the Bears. With Wan’Dale Robinson (ankle) listed as questionable, the Giants need Slayton to pick up the pace.

Sub time: The loss of inside linebacker Micah McFadden is a blow to the defense, as he was one of the most underrated players on the Giants’ roster. Next up is Darius Muasau, a 2024 sixth-round pick who started seven games as a rookie filling in for McFadden and later Okereke.

“I was just ready for my number to be called,” Muasau told The Post. “Unfortunately it had to be called early in the season because of Micah going down. You never want to see something like that, especially one of our teammates, your brother that you’ve been grinding with for two years now. I 100 percent believe in my capabilities to go out there and execute.”

Expect rookie Abdul Carter to also get snaps at inside linebacker.

Paul’s pick

It will be late early for one of these teams. This is the home opener for the Cowboys, and they for so long in their own building have slapped around the Giants.

Russell Wilson and Co. in Week 1 gave no reason for much optimism, as far as putting points on the board. Until we see it, it is difficult to believe it.
