Brewers’ Pat Murphy reads emotional Bob Uecker message after playoff clinch

The Brewers became the first MLB team to clinch a playoff berth Saturday, and beloved broadcasting legend Bob Uecker was prominent in the post-game celebration.

The Hall of Fame announcer died in January, but Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy read an emotional message attributed to Uecker in the clubhouse following a walk-off win over the Cardinals.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the letter — which was handed to Murphy by owner Mark Attanasio — was “a tribute to Uecker,” so it is unclear if it necessarily was written by him.

“Howdy, boys. Never a doubt you would get this invitation. You did it by believing. Really miss you guys, and I wish I was there,” Murphy read. “The God Almighty picked me to be on his team up here, albeit I’m the third catcher.

“Told the big guy about you guys. You play hard every night. You’re not afraid to play for each other. He’s obviously very interested in the group with this uncommon goodness… The fact that you have the best record in baseball and the best road record in baseball caught his attention. I know you guys really don’t need me, but I’ve got to tell you, I’ll be on the headset every night watching. And don’t forget to take it all in, enjoy it, keep it light and believe in each other. — Bob Uecker.”

Murphy then raised a champagne glass and added, “So let’s toast to him and our team and what we’ve achieved so far.”

With an MLB-leading 91-58 mark, the Brewers have qualified for the postseason for the seventh time in eight years, although they have not reached the World Series since 1982.

Uecker served as a broadcaster for the Brewers from 1971 through 2024. and he also enjoyed an acting career in the “Major League” movies and as a regular on the TV sitcom “Mr. Belvedere.”

Known as “Mr. Baseball,” he received the Ford Frick Award for broadcasting excellence and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 2003.

Uecker died at 90 from lung cancer on Jan. 16, and the Brewers have worn a patch on their uniforms this season in his memory.
