New Jersey just had its priciest home sale in 3 years
Talk about a rock-solid record.
In Alpine, New Jersey — an affluent suburb of New York City — a mansion built atop blasted bedrock has now set a new benchmark in stone, closing at $17.7 million. That purchase price marks the highest residential sale in the Garden State in three years.
Mansion Global was the first to report on the sale.
The 25,700-square-foot Versailles-style estate, known as Chateau de la Roche, sits on 2 acres in the gated Rio Vista enclave about a half hour from Manhattan.
The transaction, which closed Tuesday, is also Alpine’s priciest since January 2022, according to Christie’s International Real Estate Group.
The sellers, David and Mindy Kwon, purchased the land in 2011 for $3.95 million and spent four years constructing the limestone, travertine and cast stone residence.
They named it Chateau de la Roche — the rock castle in French — for the massive boulder that had to be blasted to make way for the foundation.
Completed in 2017 with designs by Zampolin & Associates Architects, the home combines Old World grandeur with modern indulgences.
Inside, the mansion has seven bedrooms and 10.5 bathrooms, outfitted with amenities more often seen in private resorts: a 15-seat theater, two plunge pools, a sauna, a steam room, a billiards room, a library, a wine cellar, two bars and a conservatory. Outside, a pool and a spa anchor the landscaped grounds.
Listing agent and interior designer Denise Albanese of Christie’s Mahwah-Saddle River Sales Gallery played a dual role in the estate’s design and marketing.
“The overall grandeur of the home is very impressive with its soaring ceilings and detailed moldings throughout, and at the same time the home is warm and inviting,” she told The Post.
The Kwons declined to comment on the sale, though Albanese confirmed they are downsizing from the estate.
The buyer was represented by Richard Orlando and Jason Pierce of Prominent Properties Sotheby’s International Realty, along with Taylor Lucyk of Christie’s International Real Estate Group.
Albanese declined to identify the buyer.
After initially listing in 2021 for $25 million, the price was reduced to $22.49 million in 2023 before landing at $17.7 million this year.
Albanese said the closing figure reflects its craft and rarity.
“I believe it sold at this price because of its quality craftsmanship and exquisite finishes and details and special amenities. It’s one of a kind,” she said.
