Miles Teller wears his heart on his sleeve in his new movie.
The actor debuted the romantic comedy Eternity at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, Sept. 7, playing an everyman who fights for his wife (Elizabeth Olsen) in the afterlife after she reunites with her chiseled first love (Callum Turner).
“I love an ordinary love, you know?” said Teller, 38, during the film’s Q&A after the screening when asked about portraying a less sweeping, more ordinary kind of love. “I grew up with a lot of men who were, you know, devoted to their wife and were always going to try and make her happy, and her happiness was his happiness.”
The Top Gun: Maverick star continued: “I just thought this [film] was a beautiful way to take a peek behind the curtain of people that you just passed in the grocery store, people that kind of stuck it out. And it just affected me greatly, honestly, when I read the script.”
In the film, the recently deceased pull into a travel expo-like “junction” where they must choose a final destination for their afterlife. A straightforward decision becomes complicated when Larry (Teller) realizes his wife Joan (Olsen) is still in love with her first husband (Turner), who died in the Korean War and has been toiling in limbo waiting for Joan for 67 years.
“It’s all about this big dilemma that Joan has,” said director David Freyne during the Q&A.
How did Olsen embody the choice between two great loves? “Well, [my character] was very overwhelmed, obviously,” Olsen, 36, replied to the moderator with a laugh during the Q&A while seated between Teller and Turner, 35. “I don’t know, I just tried to do what was on the page as best as I could!”
