Hero dog extinguishes lit stick of dynamite tossed into journalist’s yard
This pup deserves a round of a-paws.
A dog in Peru is being hailed as a canine champion after she extinguished a stick of dynamite that was chucked into her owner’s yard, saving the entire family — but leaving her unable to bark.
Carlos Alberto Mesias Zarate, a journalist, was more surprised by his dog’s heroism than the threat itself, waving off the would-be fatal blast as part of “his line of work.”
His dog, Machis, was likely just as shocked when he watched an explosive fly into their yard late one evening.
Outdoor surveillance footage captured a black-clad suspect as he lobbed a sparking object into the front yard before sprinting away, not sticking around long enough to see if they’d accomplished their mission.
The slight pup, a stout cocker spaniel mix weighing just 25 pounds, scampered down the stairs and directly to the explosive, honing in on the fizzing fuse.
Machis originally poked at the fuse and shuffled the dynamite around before she bit into it.
The fuse, miraculously, went out in her mouth, successfully averting near-disaster as authorities later discovered the explosive was the “kind of dynamite used in landmines,” NBC News reported.
“She chewed it and chewed it and saved our lives,” Zarat told the outlet.
Zarat quickly called the authorities and reported the attempted bombing. He added that they’ve since detained a suspect.
While his family walked away unscathed, Machis wasn’t as lucky.
In the days since, they realized that her vocal chords were fried, downgrading her ferocious bark captured in their surveillance to a mere rasp.
“You can’t hear her bark now,” Zarat told the outlet.
Still, Machis continues to make her presence known and has since become a bit of a celebrity.
Dogs, ever the selfless protectors, frequently put themselves between their owners and a threat, no matter how big or small.
One Chihuahua helped save her owner after he plummeted down a 26-foot ravine in Switzerland by not budging from the spot he disappeared.
Another pooch who was experiencing her golden years alongside her outdoorsy owner led rescuers to him after a rough fall in the woods.
